Liseberg is an amusement park which opened all the way back in 1923. The well-kept park is home to a large range of modern thrill rides and also family attractions, most notably Helix which draws a lot of people to the park. It is located in the city of Gothenburg in Sweden, and is easily accessible from Landvetter (Gothenburg) Airport; the Flygbussarna bus service runs frequently between the airport and Liseberg and has a stop right next to the park entrance.
The amusement park operates on a wristband or pay per ride basis. Entry only can be purchased separately, otherwise you can buy it as a combo with the unlimited rides wristband; it is of course the best value to purchase the all-in-one ride pass if planning to do lots of attractions. The park does not sell fast track, but has a virtual queuing option free of charge on the mobile app for select rides; we found on a busy day we were very limited to the number of rides we could reserve, but you can still queue normally for every ride.
Helix is Liseberg’s headline attraction, a Mack Rides launched rollercoaster which opened back in 2014 and has been regarded as one of the best in the world ever since – it’s certainly one of our favourites. The rollercoaster features lap bars to give more freedom throughout its layout of two launches. 7 inversions, 2 airtime hills and many twists and turns. What sets Helix apart from the rest is its setting nestled on the side of the rocky and green hillside, as it weaves its way around and overlooks the rest of the park.
There are 5 other rollercoasters at Liseberg. Lisebergbanan is a classic Schwarzkopf attraction with a low height restriction so most people can enjoy the speed and turns of the layout. Valkyria is the park’s newest coaster which features an impressive vertical drop into a mist filled tunnel followed by a fast couple of inversions and even airtime. In the Kinderlandt area there are two smaller coasters which are perfect for younger children. Balder, one of Europe’s best wooden coasters still sadly remains closed due to essential maintenance, but the park hopes to have it in operation for the Halloween season.
Underlandt was new for 2021 and is a much needed dark ride addition to the parks lineup after the removal of their classic Fairytale Castle attraction in 2017. The ride starts by taking you in a lift down into the Underlandt where the rabbits (Liseberg’s mascot) live, before boarding vehicles and seeing what they get up to through multiple themed scenes with many effects & animatronics. Of course things don’t go quite as planned with an unexpected character causing mischief throughout. It’s a perfect attraction aimed at children, but for adults to appreciate too with so much going on.
Liseberg certainly is the home of thrill rides with so many to choose from. Atmosfear is a giant drop tower set on top of the hill, and new for 2022 you can ride it with VR battling robot aliens, it certainly made the drop even scarier. Mechanica was sadly closed during our visit, but is usually great fun. Loke is one of Europe’s best flat rides, a giant Intamin Gyroswing gives the spinning thrill without the dizziness as it’s so big. Aerospin allows you to move your wings on your seat to try and get as many spins as possible. Jukebox is a personal favourite though, chaotically spinning and jumping around.
The park has a range of other attractions for everyone. The classic flume is a popular ride giving great views built into the hillside before getting wet on the final drop. The Kållerado rapids is another water ride which loves to give a soaking with lots of splash effects. Hanghai is a spinning Disk’o, and Lisebergshjulet is a giant Ferris wheel perched on the top of the hill giving great views of both the park and city. There are plenty of smaller children’s attractions around the park. There is also Gasten Hotel, a very highly themed haunted house with some impressive scares.
Luna Park is a new area at the park for the 2022 season. It features two brand new rides and incorporates some of the existing park attractions such as the carousel and kids play area. Tempus is the main new eye-catching attraction which is a Zamperla NebulaZ which has 4 arms with seats on either side that spin around in perfect synchronisation and is a spectacle to watch. In 2023 the area will be further expanded with a brand new rollercoaster, a junior boomerang manufactured by Vekoma.
In 2023 Liseberg are opening their very own onsite hotel, which already looks great from the outside. It is set to have 2 different themed types of rooms, with an Asian/Adventure theme overall within the hotel. There will be multiple restaurants and bars too, including one on the roof. In 2024 the hotel area will be further expanded with an indoor waterpark; we are led to believe it will be smaller than initially planned to test the popularity and allow for future expansions, which still sounds very exciting for waterpark lovers.
During our visit we were fortunate enough to be guided around the park for a few hours by the lovely Pontus. We were able to see behind the scenes of 3 rollercoasters, looking at their maintenance bays, and also inside the operator cabins. We were also given permission to film POV’s of several of the attractions which you will be able to find on our TikTok account (videos also linked to the bottom of the review) and our various other social media pages.
It has been so nice to get back to this special amusement park after almost 3 years due to covid & travel restrictions, Helix & Jukebox remain firm favourites and it was superb to experience them once again alongside the other attractions. We would like to thank Liseberg for providing us with two entry tickets & unlimited ride wristbands for our visit.
