Team X Review Title

Welcome to a place beyond your everyday life: welcome to the agency for time travel, quantum magic and adventures! Team X is an escape room company with a bit more than escaping at the heart of their experiences. Found in Cologne, Germany, this small business provides unique adventures for those who love escape experiences mixed with theatre.

Team X currently provides 4 escape experiences which have original stories and different interactivity within the worlds they are set in. Most rooms are 60 minute adventures however, the newest room being Mission Time Travel, is a 75 minute escape challenge. You also have three other rooms being The Crazy Lab, Magic Library & The Magic Archive.

Our experience with Team X was during a trip to Germany and visiting Cologne. To get to Team X, you can catch a short tram journey to a nearby stop called Eifenplatz, which it is then a walk across a nice local park and then you will find the venue. Easy to use with Google Maps and public transport apps. There are also other nearby stops depending on how much you wish to walk and which other public transport options you wish to use.

Our experience was from The Magic Archive room, which we delve a little deeper into the Harry Potter themed room below…

Before we give our thoughts and review on The Magic Archive experience, for those wondering more on the escape theatre part of Team X, let us explain. This adds onto the well known escape room experience, with the use of unique storylines, actions by actors and even the help in the room by your games master being themed to the story and immersive adventure. These are small additions to your typical experience which go a long way, giving you a better introduction, immersive adventure during your time in the rooms and carries all the way through to the end of your experience.

Costing and group sizes for Team X experiences depend, however it is recommended for groups of 4 or more. Each room has different limits so it is worth checking directly at the time of the booking. Pricing for 4 guests seems to be 136 euros, with up to 8 players it reaches 232 euros, averaging out to around 29-32 euros per person. Again, each experience may vary so do take a look before booking. For a premium rate, they are competitive for being close to Cologne and offering the theatre aspect.

Moving forward to our room, we took on The Magic Archive which came with the following story; What made Harry Potter strong? The friendship! From Ron, Hermione, from Dumbledore and the others. What friendship makes you strong? In this magical school there is a door that only those who have as much magic as courage can open. The Magic Archives. In addition to magical artefacts, this is about one thing: you and what holds you together.

Story & Theming – 7/10

The story for Magic Archive does get slightly lost beforehand in the translation from German to English, however this is not the case when you are at the experience. Before entering the experience, you do get to meet a magic professor who explains why you have been brought in and what you may entail on your journey into the magical world.

The story starts before you even enter into the experience, with you being transformed from the magic waiting room into the experience through a teleportation spell. From here, you entered into a well themed magical laboratory environment where we needed to complete a series of puzzles and find a magical artefact. Which one? We had no idea at this point but hope we would find out when solving the puzzles.

The room had a number of props which matched the magical world and even some from the Harry Potter series, so it is worth keeping an eye out for these. These were super cool and added a lot to the experience.

Within the story, we were told we had to avoid the professors evil matching twin, who may come snooping during our time in the office. Which certainly adds some tension to your game!

The story does progress and makes more and more sense the more you complete. The ending does provide a lot of answers you had at the start and ultimately comes to a great conclusion with a fun twist!

Puzzles & Flow – 7/10

The puzzles in Magic Archive was mainly in a linear style but provided plenty of challenges, unique puzzles and moments of amazement. With it being a magic themed room, you would expect some magic right? That is exactly what you get from the moment go, with some great simple effects used throughout. Some puzzles required teamwork whilst others required logic. Some even made you say funny things by mistake…

The pace we kept at was pretty consistent and kept us busy with minimal moments of being too confused or not sure where we was going next. This kept the flow of the room perfect and with the linear format, allowed you to follow the sequence of puzzles with little effort required.

With this mainly being a German experience, the translation of the room came across perfect and did not affect us solving the puzzles or causing a further delay. This room contained a mixture of search & find, electronic puzzles and some unique interactivity to pass certain wizardry challenges to continue forward.

Uniqueness – 9/10

The Magic Archive was one of the most unique rooms we have completed for some time. The room had many different elements and factors to it. Firstly, with it being an escape theatre experience, this already peaked our interest as it was not like your average escape room. Whilst we have seen the use of actors, introduction scenes and themed characters in rooms, the way it was pulled together at Team X provided a high quality, comedic and immersive adventure for all of our team.

Outside of this, you had many unique puzzles in the game which we have not seen elsewhere. These having to be solved in a different way to logic and sense or thinking outside of the box, but more the power of friendship and interactivity. This was a real different way to what we were used to and was not what we expected at all, but worked flawlessly in this themed experience.

If all of the above was not enough already, the ending was different and provided alternative endings depending on what you did. Whilst we can’t say too much without spoiling it, it added some tense, argumentative and quick decisions from our team and created a great ending in a way we also didn’t expect.

Overall, our experience at Team X was one that was magical and not to be forgotten in a hurry. Magic Archive was completely different to any escape room we have played so far for a number of unique reasons. We are sure this is translated across all the experiences they have on offer, but we can only comment on the one we attended. We managed to escape and successfully retrieve the magical archive that we needed to collect.

With our rating system, it scored a very successful 23/30 which works out to 4 stars. We would point out that the bad translation on the website for the story and the description of the style they use should not be taken as a bad point for Team X, as everything is done to a high standard when you are with them. The team is super enthusiastic and very involved in each and every game and our host was nothing short of being fantastic.

For the premium price, it is certainly worth playing one of their experiences to witness and play part of the unique style they have going on. If you like it, then you will probably wish to keep returning when you visit Cologne. All the rooms are translated to English and you can select this when booking, so if you don’t speak German, don’t let this stop you as the staff are very helpful, like most attractions in the Cologne area.

We wish to thank the team at Team X for inviting us over to play the room and offering this complimentary in return for our review and rating. Whilst this was a free experience for us, the review is our honest experience of our experience when visited earlier on in 2023.
