Elevate your view of London with the newly opened Lift 109 at Battersea Power Station. This chimney lift experience has recently opened offering guests to step inside the over 90 year old power station, ascend 109 meters and get a full 360 degrees view of the ever developing area of Battersea and beyond!
Before going into Lift 109, this is located within Battersea Power Station which is an upcoming and constantly developing area which has seen a lot happen in recent years. With this said, it has history going back over 90 years ago from when it was first built and designed as a power station to be used across London.
After many unsuccessful attempts of using the space since powering down, it was acuired in 2012 and set plans on opening up new shops, office spaces, hotels and other entertainment venues. With the chimneys having to go through a painstaking restoration project also during this time, the new shopping district opened in October 2022, home to 6 acres of boujee venues to explore.
This takes us to Lift 109, which opened shortly after in November 2022 with an exciting opportunity in this historic part of Battersea.
We visited London on a calm Sunday in February to have a look ourselves at this new experience for ourselves and below you can find our thoughts, photos and even our TikTok to catch a glimpse if it is worth doing on your next trip to London!
Entering Electric Boulevard, you are stepping into the power station where the experience is held within. With multiple entrances across its 6 acre site, it is easily locatable when in the Battersea Power Station area. We managed to travel to the location with ease by using the tube and then it is only a short walk.
Whilst the shopping centre is on multiple floors, it did not take us long to find the experience with its golden sign and shop at the far end of the building. Heading up in the building, you can find a very basic entrance which was a few screens displaying the prices, a security checkpoint for all bags & items before joining a waiting point to have your ticket scanned.
Tickets are best bought online from our understand, however, if you did just turn up on the day then they will do their best to assist where possible. Timeslots are key as you’ll be entering the experience at a set time, and you’ll only have a limited time for the whole experience. Therefore, it is best to arrive slightly before your slot to make sure you are ready.
Whilst Lift 109 is sold as a viewing experience and this is the main part, there is other smaller elements that lead up to this which happen prior to your time of heading 109 meters up.
Once you have your ticket scanned and it is your time to start the experience, the first part you enter is a history lounge also known as The Gallery. They have prepared lots of signs and displays showing the history of Battersea Power Station and everything that has happened so far in the last 90+ years. There were some interesting facts such as Pink Floyd’s famous pig promotion that flew above the power station back in the 70’s.
There is also some interactive displays such as a huge screen in the middle which explains more about the turbines, as well as a photo opportunity at an upcharge, however, this isn’t forced or mandatory which we were glad to see.
This part of the experience wasn’t long, and you were only here for around 5-6 minutes before being asked to then move onto boarding, which is where the fun really begins. When the whole group is gathered, we get advised of the next part of our adventure on Lift 109.
The next part of the experience is the Infinity room which is a giant room of where a light and sound show happens all around you. The energy particles rise & fall in different formations as you go on a journey and continued history tour. The displays around the room take you through the inside of the turbine with other funky visuals and strange sounds. It was entertaining to experience and was only a short add on to our overall experience, however, it took the power station into the future with a visual representation of the history.
After this short 5 minute experience, we then headed into the actual lift to take us part of the way up. This only took a moment, before we stepped out, went up some stairs and then had a short wait before boarding the actual glass lift which would then be our viewing platform.
Now for the main part of Lift 109, which is the 360 degrees viewing platform. We didn’t know at first how this was going to work, however, it was quite simple. As each group had a boarding time, you would follow through these smaller parts such as the gallery and the infinity room, before heading up to this main part. Here you would get a short period of time to explore the surrounding sights 109 meters up, getting the name Lift 109!
You take a short ride up in the lift with a light display around the side as you go up before being presented the sights of Battersea & London. The lift is spacious enough for a small group to explore and you remain in the glass lift as you can explore 360 degrees around you. You can see the ever growing landscape of Battersea and even see much further out to see sights such the London Eye.
We had around 10-15 minutes in the lift itself which we found to be plenty of time to go around and explore the surroundings all the way. We managed to get some nice views and plenty of photos before it was our time to head down and end our experience at Lift 109. We had another small light show as we went down before leaving and heading back down the other lift to exit out via the shop.
As you come back down, you enter the Lift 109 shop where you can purchase any photos you may of had during your time with them, or maybe grab some merchandise such as a t shirt or a resin of the Battersea Power Station. They sell everything from pin badges to gin, so there is something for all price ranges and everyone visiting.
Overall, we had a fantastic time experiencing Lift 109 with everything they had to offer. Amy said; “Lift 109 was a fab experience and a great addition to London’s collection of viewing platforms. I personally enjoyed learning about the history of Battersea Power Station and loved the new modern twist on this unique new venture”.
Dean said; “A very unique way to see London’s skyline from a different vantage point. The lighting elements inside the chimney as you’re going up in the glass lift, and the moment it raises out the top is a real spectacle not to be missed”.
Austyn said; “Lift 109 was a genuinely nice experience which allowed you to see the ever growing landscape of Battersea Power Station from 109 meters up. How the experience was done from start to finish felt complete and you didn’t feel any part was rushed or you were being short changed. As the area keeps developing, this would be great to do again in future years to come!”
Tickets for Lift 109 are available from £15.90 per adult, with options for family, group and even private ascent tickets. A huge thank you to the team at Lift 109 for inviting us to experience this new attraction and providing 3 tickets in exchange of our review, social media posts and thoughts.
