Tusenfryd is Norway’s largest amusement park! The park which translates to Thousand Joys opened back in 1988, and is currently owned by the Parque Reuinidos group who operate many other theme parks & waterparks across Europe and beyond. The park is located a short distance from the capital city of Oslo and is easily reachable by public transport. The parks season typically runs from April/May through to October with mostly weekend openings, except peak summer where it is open daily with extended hours. Tickets to the park can be purchased online and start from 399kr (Approx. £30) for above 120cm, with discounts available for smaller guests. Tickets are also available to purchase at the park entrance.
We found the public transport systems in and around the capital of Oslo easy to use with very frequent services. From Oslo airport which is located outside of the city, there are several options including bus and train to get to the centre of Oslo. We chose the high speed Flytoget service which used contactless card payment at the barriers; it ran every 10 minutes and took just 20 minutes to travel. From the centre of Oslo, the bus station is easily found, and the 505 bus with ‘Tusenfryd’ in the name will take you right outside the park; this bus runs up to every 10 minutes, and takes around 25 minutes to get to the park. Tickets for the bus and other local transport should be purchased on the ‘Ruter’ mobile app where singles or 24 hour passes for the various zones can be purchased; to be valid for Tusenfryd you need Zones 1 and 2S. There are staff members at the bus stop when making the return journey to ensure an orderly queue is formed which was helpful.
Rollercoasters
The headline attraction of the park is Speed Monster, which stands prominently over the entrance portal into the park; the Intamin rollercoaster features a quick hydraulic launch, and is followed by a smooth layout of inversions and airtime! ThunderCoaster is the parks wooden rollercoaster that has a length of almost 1km, during its boisterous layout it features a large first drop and many airtime moments and direction changes. Super Splash is a water coaster perfect for cooling off, though the real soaking comes from standing in the splash zone next to the ride. Loopen is a classic Vekoma coaster opening back with the park in 1988 featuring a vertical loop and corkscrews. There are a few other rollercoasters aimed at families and children, from a mine train ride, to a spinning coaster, and what is considered the smallest rollercoaster in the world, all giving different sensations.
Other Attractions
The amusement park has many other supporting attractions to the rollercoasters to fill the day, and appeal to the different thrill levels of visitors. Thor’s Hammer is a real highlight, with the immersive indoor attraction built inside of a cave; it takes you on a journey themed around the Norse god, with vehicle movements, special effects even the use of 3D glasses. There are two other traditional water rides which are the Ragnorok rapids and the Tømmerstupet log flume attraction to help you keep cool on the hotter days. There are plenty of smaller attractions for all of the family which include a swinging ship, swinging chairs and a children’s driving attraction plus so much more. You can find two huge thrill rides which are the SpinSpider and SpaceShot giving you spinning forces on the pendulum ride, and launching upwards on the tower ride. You can even pay an additional fee to experience the SkyCoaster attraction laying in a flying position on a giant swing which isn’t for the faint-hearted.
Dragonville – new for 2023
For 2023 a brand new area has been added to the amusement park, “with dragons, swords and dark dungeons! Are you the hero who manages to tame Storm and take the king’s sword?”. The area features a souvenir shop, a restaurant and the park have also listed The Dungeon where “All the inmates and staff are guaranteed to give you a wonderfully dark and creepy experience”. Storm – The Dragon Legend is a brand new rollercoaster experience; manufactured by Gerstlauer, it is the only inverted triple launch coaster in Europe.
During our visit the new rollercoaster had not yet opened to the public and was undergoing part of the testing phases. The rest of the area was open but looked like finishing touches were being made; we are sure it will all look great once completed. We were surprised at how busy the park was during our visit, with most queue lines at full capacity, though these mostly took under 30 minutes, so was not too bad. However, with 10:30-6pm hours and staggered openings of rides, we only just managed all 7 rollercoasters and couple of other attractions, so would definitely recommend making use of the full day and even the fast pass option if available. It was a shame that the new Storm rollercoaster did not open at the start of the season as originally anticipated, but we still saw the new area, and got to see a unique spectacle watching the coaster be ‘pulled through’ during its testing phases. We still had a really enjoyable day in the glorious sunshine and looking forward to returning in the near future for the unique new Storm coaster!
