Our thoughts for 2023… 

This was not our first visit to Spooky World, we had visited a few years ago and managed to try out some of these fantastic attractions. We love Spooky World as it has a lot to offer, with a range of different style and attractions and is has a very energetic cast. What they did lack for was theming on the outside and sometimes within, with them being hosted in shopping containers or farm buildings, so we were interested to see for 2023 what had changed. 

Our night started waiting outside for the park and we were very fortunate to work with Spooky World and experience the attractions just before they opened to the public. This was to allow us to film and take photos without confusing the public and causing any problems during the normal operations. Therefore all of our reviews are from our experience across the mazes before the general public made its way into the scream park. 

The Institute

Theming 55% | Storyline 60% | Screams 60% | Laughs 55% | Actors 70%

The Institute was a very disorientating maze right from the get go. The whole maze uses strobe lighting, making your way along this huge warehouse of cages, actors and crazy inhabitants inside. It was just lit up enough inside for you to see the scale of this attraction and the size when you first walk makes you think how long you may be in here, but the time flew by as you made your way along the attraction. The theming was limited but worked for its style and the storyline was simple yet effective. Whilst the inhabitants had very limited hiding spaces, some of them managed to get us from angles we were not expecting and equally creating many laughable moments. A huge congratulations for this team who managed to still be effective in a strobe maze with nowhere to hide. With some loud audio to back this attraction up with the chaotic setting & actors, we think this could improve also however, as one of our personal favourites on the night, we would welcome this back as not many mazes use strobes all the way through in 2023. 

Slaughterhouse

Theming 65% | Storyline 80% | Screams 90% | Laughs 80% | Actors 90%

As the theme suggests, it scared us from the offset as can you ever walk into a slaughterhouse not feeling unsettled? With cages, pig masks and lumberjack hillbillies roaming around, the whole theme and story came together very well for them here. We felt very immersed from the get go here compared to some of the other attractions they have and the team did an incredible job in doing so. From props being physically thrown near us to create horrific noises and genuine terror is something we hardly see. The urgency to keep moving quicker and quicker in this attraction is advised as whilst you’re laughing in awkwardness, it does provide moments of pure fear. A good example of a simple theme being executed perfectly. 

Field of Screams

Theming 25% | Storyline 45% | Screams 65% | Laughs 80% | Actors 90%

Whilst our rating may not reflect the true genius creation of Field of Screams, do not be fooled. They have created a real maze where you can be lost in for some time and have some terrifying characters roaming the paths ready to distract, scare and split you from your group. Whilst it lacks in its theming and story, the complexity of the route to escape and the funny yet scary moments during your time lost, it is very refreshing to see this style of attraction. The actors make the Field of Screams what it is and I think during our time lost, we made friends with most of them. The longer you are the lost, the harder it is to find your way out, with us feeling like we walked the same route a thousand times before we finally escaped.
