Challenge Point Manchester Review

10 February 2024

Challenge Point

A crazy interactive gameshow in the home of Manchester, this is Challenge Point. Teams will face a gauntlet of trials, from trivia questions to feats of skills, all in the name of winning points. Teams of 2-6 will battle it out in a series of insane mini games with the aim of winning as many points as possible. Ultimately, only one team will have the chance to advance to the final round, The Point!

Behind the team and sister company, Breakout, which is an escape room company with a number of escape rooms, they have designed Challenge Point. Pushing the boundary of live entertainment as a family-friendly day out offering unique & memorable adventure. Founders Ed & Dave mention “Ever since we popularised and spread the escape room formula to the rest of the Northwest we’ve wanted to replicate that excitement for fresh, live entertainment. This is why we moved into our new, larger premises on Newton Street last October so that we would have the space to pursue this goal. We love the concept of Challenge Point, who doesn’t want to try their hand at a game show?”

This brand new type of experience offers up to 90 minutes of entertainment, taking 5 teams of up to 6 players in each slot, with numerous timeslots throughout the day. Check out our thoughts below on what to expect if you yourself want to appear in your own game show this year!

With Challenge Point being a brand new type of experience that we have not seen before in this style, the best way to simply describe it is a mix of Crystal Maze combined with The Cube. Getting the opportunity to play 5 games that last around 5-8 minutes and they all have a different skill set required to score points and become the best team. What was cool to hear is that the winning team would participate in an extra game to score extra points and have a chance to become one of the top 5 teams on the leaderboard.

The experience is best booked online and teams of 2-6 can play. If you have more than 6 in your group, you are able to split and still play in the same time session. Tickets range from £15 through to £25 per person, dependant on if you go during a peak or off-peak visit and how many are in your team. The pricing seems to be perfect for this, as you can play for £15 per person for up to 90 minutes of entertainment playing a range of games, which is cheaper compared to other immersive experiences, escape rooms or other game show like experiences.

Currently you can find Challenge Point open Thursday through to Sunday, between 11am to 11pm, which is perfect for the family audience during the day, then friend groups during the evening looking for something different to do.

Our experience started by checking into the location lobby which you can find easily in Central Manchester. It is found on Newton Street which is in the Northern Quarter of Manchester. With it being walkable from Central Manchester and us being able to use Google Maps to simply walk to it, we turned up to an office block which has signage outside for Challenge Point & also Breakout Manchester. We then checked in by giving our name of the booking and then were ready to start our experience.

Challenge Point starts by entering into the main room which has lots of seats and coloured doors. We were asked to get comfy and that the experience would start shortly. This area would be the main area for the game show, with it being setup like they were about to film for a gameshow, with cameras and gaming props scattered around the room. After watching a little montage and introductions, which explained a lot more on what was about to happen, we were ready to start taking on our challenges for the day.

The goal was simple, play the challenges and score as many points as possible. Each challenge had a different scoring structure and was quite complex behind the scenes, so we chose to trust that they knew what they were doing. As each booking could hold up to 5 teams, you would be taken to your challenge to start, then brought back to the main area once you had completed it, so scores could be added up and the challenges could be reset before another team would take it on. In our slot, we were the only team so things were a lot quicker and there was no competitive element against them, but still to get the highest score was our objective!

The 5 challenges you are guaranteed to play are very different and allow for everybody to shine. From driving tanks to a laser maze to just simply throwing balls into containers, it all requires teamwork in order to score as many points as possible in each and every challenge so you can win during your session. One of our our favourite games would have to be the mini golf, as not only do we love mini golf but we have never seen something so cleverly designed or played in this way. Instead of playing holes 1 to 18 like traditional minigolf, why don’t you play all 18 at the same time? Sounds simple with up to 8 minutes right? Wrong, it was super difficult trying to putt your balls from behind the rope into a series of features and props to get the ball in the hole. You knew you got the number of the hole as it had a flag and lit up a light in the background. The catch was if you did put a ball in a hole twice, it would reset that hole and turn the light off, meaning you would lose points! By far our favourite game.

On the opposite side of the scale, we played Tokyo Tank, which required you to drive remote control tanks across a series of courses. Again, sounds simple but they have designed it so teamwork & coordination would be required and nothing is as simple as just driving a tank. Unfortunately, it seems the tanks didn’t like us and we had multiple issues across 2 attempts of playing this room. Whilst we can imagine it would be amazing to experience when fully working, it didn’t happen during our session.

The other 3 guaranteed challenges were very good also, from a trivia-based shooting experience through to entering a pitch-black room and dodging lasers. We even had to try scoring points in a room which was raining balls, which is absolutely hilarious and the less you know about this room the better, you just have to experience it!

Outside the main challenges, there are other filler games to be played which copy popular gameshows, like higher or lower. These quick filler games would be perfect to help the time management when the team are resetting the rooms ready for the next team and allow you the possibility to score more points.

The final challenge is for the top scoring team only and guess what, as we were the only team playing, we automatically qualify! This is a quicker challenge which only gives you 3 minutes and is a super simple yet super tough challenge. As a team of 2, it made it even harder, but we could easily see how teams of 6 could have difficulties too, so it is certainly a cleverly designed challenge to wrap the session up.

As our experience came to an end, our score was displayed on the TVs throughout the room which showed what we scored behind each door. When you play against other teams, this is great to see how everybody else is getting on and if you did better than them in the different challenges. We loved how this made it super competitive and even for us, so we knew how we was getting on compared to the top teams.

Overall, we had a fantastic time at Challenge Point and really loved the concept and a handful of the challenges we took on the day. We do feel that as a new experience that is has it challenges (if you pardon the pun), with it feeling a little cheap in certain areas and that some of the challenges just didn’t work fully for us, which with the competitive element you would want it to be fault proof. We know the team are constantly adding and improving Challenge Point, with us already seeing a new challenge there since the time of our visit.

A huge thank you to the team for inviting us to play and take on their challenges. They did provide us a complimentary experience and permission to film in return of our review and video. We did play as a team of 2 and would highlight this is another experience perfect for groups of all sizes, but best played with 4 in our opinion to have the chance to score more points.

We really recommend Challenge Point and if you are in Manchester, you should go play these crazy mini games in your very own game show experience. Tickets are always available via their website and make sure you watch our TikTok to get a further glimpse on what you may see during your time at Challenge Point!
