Explore one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World with the team behind Horizon of Khufu. This brand new experience has come to Stratford, London and is ready to take you virtually to explore Egypt’s Giza Pyramids and so much more using the latest technology on the market. A journey which will take you back in time by 4500 years, providing a deeply emotional and engaging story into the heart of Egyptian culture.
Horizon of Khufu is the name of the virtual experience created by the team Excurio Immersive Expeditions and presented by Eclipso Immersive Entertainment. This partnership has allowed them to create a unique experience which many would not have the opportunity to and brought it to live in the VR world. The teams have taken this adventure to many locations, with tickets currently available in London & Montreal. There are many other locations in the works and maybe even more virtual worlds and expeditions to follow.
Tickets are best booked online and you can find a range of dates & times. Mostly open 5 days a week from Wednesday to Sunday, you can get tickets as early as 9am and as late as 8pm, providing plenty of opportunity to make your way into the city to explore this attraction. Costing £21 per adult, they do have a range of offers on from groups, children and disability which you can find more on their website about. Each ticket grants you access to explore Horizon of Khufu at your selected start time & day.
Below you can find a little more about our experience on the day…
Finding Horizon of Khufu was pretty simple. For those that know London, you just need to find your way into Stratford and to the Westfield Shopping center and on the outskirts, you will find a large building with the sign & entrance. Heading in, we were greeted at the reception desk which confirms your booking. To prepare for the experience, you can head to the toilets and put any loose belongings such as coats & bags in a locker for free.
You then enter into a waiting area and are asked for your name as they get you loaded into the virtual world. You will also be given a short talk about safety when you enter into the virtual world. Giving you some basic instructions on how to keep your own space, as you will be walking around a large space with other guests. Everything was kept simple so this is not to worry if you haven’t done anything like this before.
After a further short wait, we were then given our virtual backpacks which is strapped onto your back like a backpack would be. This isn’t heavy and is what is required along with the virtual headset to enter into the experience. Once you have the backpack on, the headset was then assisted by a guide before loading your group into the world. From here, you were then guided by the video and audio to start exploring.
The start of the exploring was a little uneasy as you’re still trying to get adjusted to walking around blind but you quickly get lost into the Egyptian landscape presented in the virtual world. The story started with meeting a tour guide who would take your group on a tour of the Great Pyramid of Giza as it was more than 4500 years ago. Getting to see it from the ground and then going up and even within, it was great for someone like myself who has never explored it in real life. For those who have been, you get to discover areas like the Queen’s Chamber and other areas which are usually hard to access or out of bounds for tourists.
Whilst educational, the journey does have a very strong story element with a magical cat guiding you through the second half as things start to go wrong. This keeps everything a little more interesting. Being able to freely explore the areas and walk around large areas in each scene allowed for you to be kept engaged and see it from different viewpoints.
The experience as a whole was pretty cool as we had not done exploration quite like it in an education way. The limits this could create for other wonders of the world and other interesting parts of the world, give an endless opportunity to explore. The VR works flawlessly and is some of the best we have seen in recent times.
A huge thank you to the team for inviting us to come explore, providing us 3 free tickets to enjoy Horizon of Khufu. Tickets are available up until June at present and we hope to see it extend and adapt moving forwards.
