Every October, fantasy turns to fear in Skegness. Fear Island ‘Deja Vu’ returns throughout October with several scary & spooky additions, with there being attractions and shows for everybody to enjoy. With 3 scare attractions for a more mature audience, 1 family friendly maze, a ride overlay and 2 shows, there is more than enough to experience outside of everything else they normally offer.
Fear Island is the overlay for Fantasy Island, located near Skegness. Home to multiple thrilling rides such as Millennium and Odyssey, plus a large indoor entertainment complex and outdoor market, there is plenty to see and do. You can find unique rides not seen at other UK theme parks here, such as Harrington Flints Island Adventure which is a interactive trackless dark ride that is pretty cool to see.
With the help of the Gary Starr Creative team, Fear Island is now award winning and they plan on turning up the terror once again. We see the return of Psycho Mansion but aimed towards families this year with its overlay of the phantoms. Toucan Tours returns with it’s spooky additions. Then you have the award winning Ravenous returning alongside Outpost. Then new for 2024 is 9 Circles, a solo experience travelling through nine levels of hell.
The event is on selected dates in October and you can either purchase each scare attraction separately or the best deal is with the Fear Island wristband, giving you access to all rides throughout the day and 1 entry into each horror attraction. This costs £44 on the day or £39.60 if bought in advance online.

Our First thoughts…
The event has really grown over recent years and last year we’ve seen the event become the busiest it’s been. This year is no different and the crowds have flocked to this popular amusement park for their Halloween offering. We enjoyed the start of our day at 11am by doing some of the rides like Millennium and Harrington Flints, before starting to head to the attractions before they opened.
The benefit of Fear Island is that they don’t batch huge groups in per maze, meaning you are guaranteed a great experience in every run-through. With this said, they are low throughputs and they have signage out for 2 hours on some maze queue lines, so wait times can be excessive. On our visit, we didn’t complete all the mazes, with Outpost reaching what we believe to be a 2 hour-plus queue. So we would keep this in mind when visiting and do the mazes as early as possible, recommending Outpost or Ravenous as your first mazes.
We actually really enjoyed the shows they had on, which was the Pirates of Blackbeard Bay, that had some great comedic moments, even for adults! The small team were great interacting with the children and they could sing live, which was amazing to see. They also brought back the mystical mountain show, which sees a projection show in the pyramid celebrate Halloween complete with sparks and lasers.

The Phantoms of Psycho Mansion – Scare Score: 65%

The family friendly version of Psycho Mansion was actually a lot of fun. This family friendly fright offered more theatrical scenes and developing a story more than scares. Don’t get us wrong, as you wander through the floors inside this funhouse, there are plenty of ghoulish creatures ready to welcome you, or should I say unwelcome you. As you go up and down the psycho corridors, we met freaky characters and learnt the story of the bride who killed her husband and herself. They had some really unique effects and whilst not terrifying, it contained moments where we wanted to move quickly to prevent being too scared. Definitely a great family additional.
9 Circles – Scare Score: 60%

A brand new maze for 2024 which takes you on a solo trip to hell. Entering 9 levels of fear, all by yourself. You will enter the maze alone and likely spend the bulk of it, trying to find a friend or the exit. The introduction sees you entering a coffin and starting the process of death, then when the time is right, you will be processed through the 9 circles. Whilst not the most scariest, it was certainly different and unique for Fear Island to pull off this concept. The ending managed to fool us and took a turn we didn’t expect.
The Ravenous – Scare Score: 87%

Now an award winning maze, The Ravenous is a family that you don’t want to meet! The whole family are ready to get up close and personal as they welcome you into their home. As you get aquatinted with the residents, you then head to the dinner table to find out you might be next on the plate. With some hilarious comedic moments, getting soaked in the garden and some terrifying jump scares at the end, they have all basis covered for your visit. They are wacky, wild and chaotic and we were freaked out for every second whilst inside the longest maze at Fear Island. If you’re going to do any maze here, then don’t miss this!
Unfortunately we didn’t have time to complete Outpost due to how busy Fear Island was on the Saturday. We absolutely love how busy the event now gets but with the low throughputs and on a peak Saturday, you do have to prepare to queue quite a long wait if you want to complete all the attractions at the event.
Overall, Fantasy becomes even more fearful this Halloween and for anybody in Skegness or the surrounding areas, should absolutely clear their diaries and make a visit. An event like this is hard to come by, with fantastic effects, unique concepts and an energetic cast to keep it pumping with fear. With the rides, arcade and everything else that comes with being a seaside park, Fantasy Island does have a full package ready for Halloween.
