Beyond immersive theatre, ‘1881’ seamlessly integrated gameplay. Finding items and solving puzzles wasn’t about difficulty, but about assigning pivotal roles that shaped outcomes. One of us, for instance, swayed a guest’s allegiance, earning a private, decadent celebration with chocolate, gin, rum, and an exclusive ‘1881’ party. The inclusion of food and drink, and challenges tied to them, was a novel and immersive touch. Every choice, every consent or refusal, altered the narrative’s course.

The villa’s two-hour transformation was both spectacular and sinister. A gradual escalation from calm to chaos culminated in a dramatic crescendo: vanishing characters, maniacal laughter, and a disturbing tableau of death by octopus. The unsettling strains of a screeching violin and a haunting song under a stormy sky amplified the growing unease. The lingering eeriness of the final song echoed as we were ushered out, a chilling conclusion.

‘1881’ exceeded expectations for a Maltese debut. Its intricate narratives, high-caliber interactions, secretive elements, and engaging gameplay coalesced into a polished, compelling production. The extended run is well-deserved, and we eagerly await future high-quality theatre from Teatru Malta.
