“Will you start the fans, please!” The Crystal Maze offers the ultimate team challenge, allowing you to step back in time and become contestants in a real-life recreation of one of television’s most iconic game shows. The objective is straightforward: guide your team through the maze, earning as much precious time as possible for the grand finale in The Crystal Dome, and then score as many points as you can to climb the coveted leaderboard.
For those unfamiliar with the legendary Crystal Maze, it was a beloved British game show that first aired in 1990, quickly amassing a devoted following. The premise of the show involved teams of contestants navigating four distinctively themed zones, striving to win crystals by successfully completing a variety of challenges. These challenges, lasting just a few minutes each, tested mental acuity, physical prowess, skill, or presented an element of mystery. Each crystal earned translated into valuable seconds within the final Crystal Dome. The Crystal Maze Live Experience meticulously recreates this thrilling format, offering you the exciting opportunity to step into the game and experience the show firsthand.
The Crystal Maze Live Experience is brought to life by Little Lion Entertainment, renowned for crafting immersive and engaging experiences. You can find this adventure in either London or Manchester, with specific opening hours available when making your booking. With a range of ticket options, the standard admission starts at £68 per person. While certainly not the cheapest outing, it undeniably positions itself as a premium entertainment offering. The core experience lasts approximately 75 minutes, but factoring in introductions and preparation time, you should expect to be at the venue for around two hours in total. They also provide gift vouchers, specialized stag and hen packages, and even corporate packages for team-building events.
Upon arriving at the venue, we checked in at reception before making our way up several flights of stairs to the bar area. Here, you can store any belongings in the provided lockers, enjoy a drink at the bar, and await the official start of your experience. Once it’s time, you’ll ascend the final flights of stairs and enter the briefing room. Our adventure began with a nostalgic introductory video, setting the perfect tone before we were greeted by our maze master for the session. We were fortunate to have the one and only Tim Tuna, who certainly lived up to his name with a fin-tastic array of fish puns! One of the brilliant aspects of The Crystal Maze Live Experience is that each maze master brings their own unique personality, ensuring that no two experiences are quite the same. Carrying his trusty fish prop, Tim explained what we could expect and took the time to get to know our team before we plunged into the maze.
Teams can consist of up to eight people, so smaller groups might be paired with others. However, for those seeking a more exclusive experience, a premium option is available to block off any remaining slots, guaranteeing a private show. We opted for this as a team of four, which allowed for a more personalized and engaging time with our maze master, and potentially more games.
With introductions and essential information covered, we selected our team captain and began our descent into the first of the four iconic zones: Medieval!
Although our adventure began in the Medieval zone, we would go on to experience all four iconic zones: Future, Industrial, and Aztec. Each zone boasts its own distinct quirks and a unique mode of transportation. We found ourselves frantically navigating slides, crawling through tunnels, and even experiencing the novelty of ‘teleportation’ to reach the relevant areas – a fantastic detail that stays true to the original TV show’s charm.
Across the four zones, each of us had the opportunity to play around four games, with approximately four to five games available in each zone. The selection of games appears to be random, and the specific skill required for each – be it mental, physical, skill, or mystery – is announced just before the chosen team member enters the room. Only one person from the team participates in each game, and the player must be nominated before the challenge is revealed. It’s crucial to remember that if the designated player fails to escape the game room within the time limit, they become ‘locked in.’ To free their teammate, the team must make the strategic decision to sacrifice one of their hard-earned crystals.
With such a wide array of games, some of our absolute favorites were undoubtedly the physical challenges. From deftly dodging laser grids to accurately hitting targets and scaling climbing walls, there was a thrilling variety. We also particularly enjoyed a unique challenge against the maze master, which was a novel and engaging addition we hadn’t anticipated. The skill-based games were also a highlight, as they allowed the rest of the team to actively participate, making teamwork essential for deciphering clues and offering assistance. All the games presented a significant challenge, with many nail-bitingly close calls. In numerous instances, it came down to the final seconds to determine whether we would successfully secure the crystal. While it might appear straightforward on television, being the one under pressure in the game is an entirely different experience!
What truly elevates the entire Crystal Maze experience is the distinctive character of each of the four zones. The Medieval zone felt authentically dark and somewhat grungy, with the puzzles leaning towards simpler mechanics and less reliance on technology, perfectly capturing the essence of that era. In stark contrast, the Futuristic zone was brimming with technology-based games, all set within a spaceship environment complete with vibrant lights and, of course, lasers. The Industrial zone effectively conveyed its theme with an abundance of pipes, characteristic sounds, and a rusty aesthetic, while the Aztec zone naturally featured plenty of sand underfoot. Each zone was enhanced by unique sound effects, maintaining a strong sense of immersion from the moment you stepped inside. While the audio during the individual games was perhaps a little understated, this was easily overlooked as we became engrossed in the challenges themselves.
Our team managed to collect a respectable 12 crystals! This meant we had a valuable 1 minute and 10 seconds inside the legendary Crystal Dome. As we entered this final chamber, we stepped into the swirling vortex and braced ourselves to catch the flurry of tickets being blown around the dome. The simple instruction was to grab as many as possible and deposit them into the holder by the door. As the fans roared to life, the clock began its countdown, and the exhilarating chaos commenced. It was a truly fitting and exciting conclusion to our gameshow adventure. We were told our final tally of just under 180 tickets was quite impressive!
Upon exiting the gameshow area, we found ourselves back in the bar space, where we could view the official photos from our experience, available for purchase. Opting for one of their packages, we acquired six printed photos along with all the digital downloads for a total of £35. They also had a selection of other merchandise on display, which would undoubtedly appeal to fans of the show.
Overall, The Crystal Maze Live Experience is an absolute blast and a genuine tribute to the beloved TV show. They have successfully translated so many iconic elements of the original program into this live format, keeping you thoroughly immersed in well over an hour of fantastic fun. You’ll undoubtedly be left wanting more time and eager to return again and again.
