Clacton Pier is the hub of entertainment found in Clacton-on-sea, near Colchester in the east of England. With awards such as Pier of the year in 2020, you can experience amusement park rides, play ten pin bowling, minigolf, softplay and much more. 2023 hosts an exciting year for Clacton Pier, with a brand new attraction with a dinosaur theme perfect for the family audience.
Before we look further into the current version of Clacton Pier, it has history that stems all the way back to 1870. It used to host an open air swimming pool, a casino and dance hall as some of the buildings and entertainment found over the years. With damage during the World War and a later fire, the pier has had restoration works multiple times to create what it is today.
Now a destination all year round, the pier keeps its history yet develops with the times with new attractions, rides and technology to keep customers returning time and time again.
For visiting guests on a seaside trip or even locals, the most popular ticket option is the Big Day Out Band. This offers you unlimited rides, 18 hole minigolf, 1 go kart race, 5 tokens for the arcade, 50 free arcade tickets and a ride on the big wheel. Costing only £22.50 when booked online in advance or £25 on the day.
For more regular guests, you can purchase an annual pass to Clacton Pier costing £49.99, giving you year round rides and 20% attractions and food & drink. With a fun card and other offers available year round, you can always find good value entertainment for your visit, so take a look at the Clacton Pier website before visiting!
New for 2023 – Jurassic Pier
Starting off with the new attraction for 2023, Jurassic Pier is a 4D prehistoric dinosaur adventure that takes guests on an exhilarating off road journey to see a wide range of dinosaurs. Guests will start this jurassic encounter by meeting some of the dinosaur handlers and taking a memorable picture, before heading into the library waiting area. Here you can watch a pre show of what is to come before stepping foot into a highly detailed queue line area for the ride. The area includes a handful of dinosaurs you can snap before entering the queue line to ride.
The ride is 4D cinema, so expect moving seats, flashing lights, water effects and more as you experience this ride. Due to this, guests must be 1m as a minimum to ride. Guests under 1.1m must have an adult with them.
The screening had lots of effects that were well timed with some great 4D moments. It had elements that were pretty scary and had everybody screaming, so we would recommend the most fearless adventurers to trial this out.
From entering into the new ride, everything was well themed, highly detailed and provided a great experience overall. You can check out your photos at the end as well as a dinosaur shop to pick up something to remember your time enjoying Jurassic Pier. This attraction does cost £7.50 per person to experience.
Other Rides & Attractions
Outside of the new experience, there are plenty of other rides & attractions to experience across the pier. They have two coasters, one being a wacky worm styled coaster perfect for kids and the other being Looping Star for the more thrilling experience. You can find all of the classic fair rides here to including a Helter Skelter, Twister, Miami and Dodgems.
Included in your Big Day Out Band, you can even take a ride on the go kart attraction. This allowing guests to go on a go kart for around 10 minutes on their figure of 8 track. This was one of our favourites and is something certainly not to miss during your visit.
Other rides we are yet to experience would be The Wheel, which is giant wheel at the front of the park giving you incredible views of the pier and surrounding area. You also have a log flume which seemed very popular and gave guests a good soaking.
Overall, there is plenty to experience and ride here for guests of all ages, so is perfect for a family day out at a reasonable price.
Minigolf & Arcade
Adventure minigolf is another side attraction you can find at Clacton Pier. This 18 hole course goes both indoors and outdoors, offering also two floors of entertainment. If that wasn’t enough, you can try and win a prize on the 19th hole at the very end. The course offered plenty of difficulty throughout and it was nice for it start inside, go outside and then end back inside too. Perfect for all weathers and skill levels. The holes had some decent themeing, such as a lighthouse and skulls, using the plants and lights to create a more detailed course.
What every pier and seaside needs is an arcade and Clacton Pier does not disappoint! Here you can find a state of the art arcade which constantly has new games being added to keep their list updated and modernised. Games can be played used your Big Day Out Band or by purchasing a fun card to put tokens on. All games are token based here, so the card can keep log of your tickets virtually. We enjoyed playing mario kart racing as our group of 4 as well as exploring the rest of the offerings they had. It was a pretty big arcade and we would say they would have plenty to do for all ages, even an 18+ area for adults.
For more details on the fun card and what they have to offer, we recommend you check out the Clacton Pier website.
Fireworks & Events
Clacton Pier love putting on an event and they have several throughout the year. One of the most popular and regular however, is their firework displays. This is a free display which can be viewed at the end of the Clacton Pier, so it is great for locals and anybody in the area. On our visit, we got to see a 10-15 minute display of fireworks which was a great way to spend our final moments on the pier before heading to bed. With this said, we have now heard they have expanded their successful firework display to include lights & sounds, to make it bigger, better and bolder than ever before. So we highly recommend not missing out on the fireworks if you are visiting in 2023, with the dates found on the website!
Outside the fireworks, you can find them open during Halloween & Christmas, offering additional seasonal entertainment on top of the usual offerings. The Halloween event Evil On Sea is due to return in 2023 with more details being announced closer to the time.
Ultimately, whenever you may be looking to visit Clacton Pier, it is always worth checking what event may be on so you don’t miss out on the fireworks or other seasonal enjoyments they put on!
Food & Drink
Finally, every good pier needs food & drink and Clacton Pier have a wide array of options for you to sink your teeth into. At the entrance of the pier, you can find the classic fish & chips option, which was reasonably priced and very enjoying! Outside on the pier you can find BurgerBox which we tried also, providing plenty of burger, hot dog and chips options. You can find a number of stands across the pier offering plenty of sweet treats for sweets, ice creams and slushies. We loved the ice creams that much that one of us (not saying it was Dean, but it was), had 2!
We also enjoyed our favourite potato snack on a stick which seemed to be new for the pier also! Whilst quite expensive, it was similar priced to other places we have seen it at across the years.
Outside of all the food and snack options, there is a bar at the front of the pier also for those who may want an alcoholic beverage. This was fairly priced and had plenty of options. Work was being done in there during our visit which meant it was quieter than usual it seemed, however, it allowed for us to get out drinks served quick and more time to have fun in the arcades & rides.

Overall, Clacton Pier was a huge surprise to us with how much there was to do there. Whilst not local to us, our review was taken from our two visits to the pier, one during a normal day opening and the other was during the Jurassic Pier press event before its official opening. All of the rides and attractions offered plenty of fun and we really enjoyed the go karts and the new attraction. We believe it will be a big hit with families and offer something fresh and exciting for locals and everyone visiting over the summer.
A huge thank you to the whole team at Clacton Pier who arranged our visits. They did provide us with four tickets on both trips, which included free food & drink and use of the Big Day Out Band. We did get exclusive permission to film and take photos inside the new attraction and rest of the pier, so make sure you don’t copy yourselves unless you have reached out to Clacton Pier first.
All of the team were super friendly, from the management through to the ride and entertainment team. If you are nearby or looking to visit somewhere with seaside thrills this year, then add Clacton Pier to that list as we highly recommend it.
