Colchester Zoo Trail of Terror Review ()

INTRODUCTION

Expect the unexpected as Colchester Zoological Society transforms by night into the terrifying Trail of Terror! This event is not for the faint of heart, inviting you to take a long, eerie stroll through the zoo after dark.

The route stretches over 1.5 miles and features everything from zombies to clowns and everything in between. The experience even includes a train ride that plunges you into a dramatic story where you might not make it out alive. Don’t worry—there are safe zones and live entertainment available to keep your night going.

The event is held in Colchester (East of England), operating outside the normal zoo hours. Entry slots run from 6:30 PM through to approximately 9:00 PM.

For 2025, the event ran on selected nights throughout October (17th, 18th, 24th, 25th, 27th, 29th, and 31st). Due to its immense popularity, all tickets for the 2025 run sold out before peak week even began! It is highly recommended to register your interest for 2026 early, as the event has already confirmed its return.

THE OVERALL EVENT…

WOO – Variety | WOO – Uniqueness | BOO – Side Shows

The Trail of Terror operates as a unique, continuous maze that is expertly punctuated by safe zones and an end entertainment hub. The trail strategically incorporates zones where you can decompress: The First Safe Zone comes around a third of the way through the maze, offering a chance to catch your breath, use the toilet, and grab a snack or drink, with entertainment provided by stilt walkers and jugglers. The Second Safe Zone is just over the halfway mark, featuring different food options, such as hot dogs, plus more drink options, and toilets, with the entertainment shifting to a magician. The next major section is the train ride, before you complete the rest of the maze and enter the Final Hub, which is where your experience concludes, featuring a DJ, a licensed bar for alcoholic drinks, and multiple food options.

The variety across the entire event is incredibly diverse. Not only is the entertainment different in each safe zone, but the long trail itself features a wide range of horror themes. Some sections throw in comedy elements, and others showcase completely unexpected concepts that work perfectly within the zoo setting. The uniqueness of the Trail of Terror is unmatched. Hosting a scare event across the zoo grounds is genuinely eerie and gives the team plenty of diverse, unusual spaces to use. Crucially, they have successfully integrated both indoor spaces and outdoor pathways while ensuring the route keeps away from the animals so they are not disturbed. Due to the intense schedule (having to build and set up in the 90-minute window between the zoo closing and the scare event opening), the side shows are understandably limited, with no extra activities available. It would be great to see the event add some extra activities in the future as they continue to grow, encouraging guests to stick around a little longer.

Trail of Terror

WOO – Concept | WOO – Enjoyment | BOO – Audio & Lighting

While there’s so much more to see and many more scares to experience, we don’t want to spoil all the surprises inside the Trail of Terror. We had a fantastic time enjoying the entire event, which feels complete and polished. The train ride offered a fantastic story, creating a completely different attraction within the maze that was pure fun. With all the visible improvements and changes this year, the team is only getting better.

It’s truly impressive that most of the scare actors are actually the team from Colchester Zoological Society—that’s dedication!

You’re already too late for 2025, but don’t miss out on next year! Take a look at our video (link to be inserted) to get a glimpse of what you missed this season, and be sure to head to their socials right away to register your interest for 2026!

The team very kindly allowed us an exclusive walk-through to capture images and videos just prior to opening to the public, along with complimentary entry to enjoy the event. This was provided in return for our content, review, and ratings.
