THE OVERALL EVENT…

WOO – Uniquess | WOO – operations | BOO – Entertainment

Dr Frights has returned for another year of Halloween terror and for this season, they have brought a whole new overlay to the event. With the new tagline, Terror Trials, this will now see you step inside 7 fears, which transform into 7 walkthrough mazes to bring them to life.

The event starts by a queue system out the front of the attraction. As it’s a linear event, they have decided that you may have to queue before going in but after this, you will get to experience everything with a very minimal wait thereafter. The new façade looked great with the Fear Institute overlay to it also. The uniqueness of the fear institute and playing to the 7 fears, which ranged from chainsaws to AI, shows the real world as it is today with new and old fears being present.

Unfortunately there isn’t any entertainment as such outside of some music at the end hub. There is no shows or performances, plus they used to have a screen showing some of the scares but that wasn’t on during our visit from what we could see. We would love to just see something a little more so we can stick around after the scares and main attraction. The operations worked really well, with Dr Frights being able to operate that you go around in small groups. We were batched in our own group and although the gaps are quite quick, we didn’t really catch up with any other group during our run. Even if we did, there is a break after every 2 mazes, so that spaces everybody back out and gives you a little break.

Black death

WOO – Screams

As the introduction maze and playing on the fear of disease, Black Death took you into medieval village and produced plenty of effective scares right away. It felt every few seconds, we were jumping and terrified.

BOO – concept

Whilst this is a great and very realistic fear, it feels like an old one. With many more recent fears of other diseases, it would have been certainly more interesting with something more modern compared to one of the more older diseases.

WOO – Actor Performance

There was such a good cast in Black Death. They managed to roam mysteriously through the space, hide in the shadows and provide some really haunting moments. It was pretty intense and the team did a fantastic start to our experience.

Maid to Kill

WOO – Audio

The second maze being Maid To Kill took on a futuristic and current fear for many. The audio in this maze was very prominent and they had talking overlays of robots and how they are wanting to kill you. It fitted the maze and brought it to life a little more.

BOO – Theming

With a futuristic theme, it was always going to be hard to pull it off. Unfortunately with a budget and it only being one maze, they couldn’t spend the money for such futuristic items or use technology that fits the current world of where it is. It was very maid heavy and they did have some unique styles to try and create some haunting effects and visuals.

WOO – Storytelling

The story was very clear, it was about robots and AI taking over and they were dressed up as maids and being ready to kill. The attraction featured many maid like beings who had one thing on their mind, to murder. It is such a simple story but has a deeper meaning with AI taking over and is a true fear of the 21st century.

Lights out!

WOO – Audio

The audio in Lights Out was some of the best and memorable so far this Halloween. They managed to create the audio to be very intense, having it add to the layer of tension this maze already created. It interacted with the lighting sequence, giving it the name and playing on the fear of darkness, it worked perfectly.

BOO – storytelling

The story was the weakest element of this maze, with it more playing on the phobia and fear of darkness. There wasn’t too much more we noticed compared to the other attractions they had.

WOO – Screams

With the fear of darkness, it gave plenty of opportunities to get scares. With the maze being more in the dark than in the light, it meant the cast could move around easily without being spotted. We were very terrified walking through, which was already a challenge from the lights flickering.

Blood Bayou

WOO – Actor Performance

The fear of chainsaws was up next and with Blood Bayou, the family was ready for you around each corner. With plenty of chainsaws and energy, the hillbillies were up to standard and did greatly with interacting with you, having a creepy vibe about them whilst still fitting well with a swamp feel.

BOO – Costume & Makeup

The costumes were classic hillbilly styled and whilst they were not bad, they just felt a little simple for us. Same with the makeup, they just didn’t have anything unique or standout and for this theme, it is expected but makes for the weakest element in our scare rating system.

WOO – lighting & SFX

The lighting and special effects worked greatly in this maze. With plenty of laser swamps, it gave that bayou feel to it, with the use of smoke and some props in the way. They had chainsaws and plenty of lights. There was enough to make this maze realistic and added another layer to it, without these it wouldn’t be anywhere near as good.

Trick or treat street

WOO – Audio

Trick or Treat starts off the second half of Dr Frights, with the fear of the Boogeyman of Halloween. All of the traditional characters from classic horror films feature in some way here and the audio plays a big part in bringing everything together. With another intense, heart beating track, it was vital in keeping that tension going inside.

BOO – Storytelling

Outside of the fear introducing videos, the story for this maze was all about different characters and being based on an American street. It just didn’t feel as strong on the story and no story being played out.

WOO – Actor performance

The characters here moved quick to get their scares and played the creepiness of their roles. I mean as soon as we stepped inside this zone, we had like 5 different characters corner us, which was terrifying. They just managed to do what was required at the right time and ultimately, get the scares in and work together in producing that horror.

The Terror Below

WOO – Enjoyment

The Terror Below was a really unique and different maze and this made it actually really enjoyable. It is unusual to do a maze based on a fear that affects masses and enjoy it, but it just worked and visually was quite pleasing. It had the right amount of scares and all the elements came together to just make it a solid scare maze.

BOO – Costume & Makeup

The costumes and makeup didn’t feel anything special. There weren’t many characters we saw for too long to see what they were wearing but for a cool concept, we wished we did. We hoped they would be playing to the theme, but it was hard to tell with what we had seen and why it’s rated our weakest element of this maze.

WOO – Concept

The concept for this maze is certainly different. Playing on the fear of claustrophobia and putting you on a submarine, they’ve built this very uniquely. The pathways are very tight with tubing and other obstacles in your way, making it actually pretty claustrophobic.

Killer Clowns: Super Happy FUnworld

WOO – Enjoyment

What an ending to a terrifying terror trial. The Killer Clowns are back and this time, they have brought you their super happy fun world, which has many different sections to it. It is hard not to enjoy this finale, as instead of just pure scares, there is plenty to laugh and just enjoy as your journey comes to an end at Dr Frights.

BOO – Screams

As a more fun and enjoyable ending, the scares were always going to be reduced. It still has some scares, but they were more spooks and creepiness, with the clowns still roaming their super happy fun world. No big scare finale here, just fun.

WOO – Audio

The audio was also very strong here. Playing some classic party hits in the background, it also has voice over announcements of all the different zones they have in the world. From minigolf to the arcade and cinema, it was quirky and stood out. It was like a funfair style audio but just worked for clowns and what they were trying to achieve.

Our time at Dr Frights Halloween Nights was so good. We loved the new themes and how most of the mazes have changed completely making it an almost fully new experience. The overarching Fear Institute story didn’t go unnoticed, we loved how this took over the intro videos of some of the mazes, the overall marketing and across the event. It was a clever way of implementing fears and phobias, making them into mazes and then interlinking it all together. Our standouts have to be Black Out with the audio and lighting combo and Killer Clowns, which has to be a fan favourite if you’ve been before.

A huge thank you to the team at Dr Frights for inviting us once again to cover the event. They did provide us with complimentary tickets in return for our honest feedback and content of the event.

They have tickets available up to Halloween night itself for 2026, so don’t miss out and grab them whilst you can!
