Drayton Manor Review

Drayton Manor Resort has opened for the 2023 season with a year of events, family fun rides and so much more. For those who have not been to or heard of Drayton Manor Resort, it is the fourth largest theme park in the UK located in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Home to over 50 theme park rides & attractions, a zoo and an on site hotel, they have plenty to keep you occupied during your visit.

Drayton Manor opened back in 1950 and has expanded massively since then, with Looping Group who owns West Midland Safari Park & Pleasurewood Hills taking over since 2020. With 2022 being an exciting year for Drayton Manor, they have now rebranded with a new logo, a new look as well as expanded with their new Vikings area which invaded the resort back in May.

The resort is more known for targeting the family market over the years and the removal of thrill rides in recent years has made Drayton Manor more for the younger audience. They are determined to continue to expand their offering and be fun for everyone, which is the slogan of the park.

We were kindly invited by Drayton Manor to come along to the opening of the 2023 season to capture everything thrilling & fun for the new season ahead, including a long list of many new events, the incredible zoo and all of the much loved rides they have to offer.

VIKINGS – 2022 NEW AREA

Invading the resort in 2022 was a whole new land of discovery, Vikings! Including all-new, exhilarating rides and attractions inspired by ancient gods and legends. Starting with the head line attraction being Thor, a Disk’O Coaster. With only a handful of these in the UK, it is a perfect family thrilling ride which we loved and enjoyed the spinning weightless sensation. Next up is Loki, the UK’s first Zamperla Nebulaz, which rotates in a fast speed as you feel the wind rushing by in another ultimate thrill ride for the family audience.

For the younger audience, they have introduced Sleipnir which allows guests to learn how to ride an ancient mythical horse. Finally, you have Jormungandr, which is a rethemed coaster at the resort as you take a voyage through the Vikings area.

On top of the rides, the land is one of the best themed within the resort and matches the Viking name. They have a food & drink stall and plenty of seating in the land too. We enjoyed our first visit here and a perfect introduction into the theme park. With this new land showing hope of new thrilling attractions being added to the line up, it can only get better for the resort in future years.

Thomas Land – 15 Years Celebration

Drayton Manor is the home of Thomas Land, with over 25 rides and attractions for all Thomas fans to enjoy. With the 2023 season starting, it is also 15 years since Thomas Land first opened at the resort, so they are throwing Thomas and his friends a birthday party. This including some additional entertainment in the area, a birthday cake and even a cute little party hat for Thomas himself.

Whilst the area is dedicated for the younger audiences with a number of the rides that many children can go on, we experienced some of our favourites such as Winston’s Whistle-Stop Tour that takes you on a tour up in the air around Thomas Land with some fun commentary. You also have Troublesome Trucks which is a junior roller coaster and Diesel’s Locomotive Mayhem which takes you for a little spin.

There is plenty more to explore in this area and expected later this season, a brand new attraction coming soon. So, it worth keeping an eye on that!

Top Thrilling Rides & Attractions

Drayton Manor has many great thrilling rides & attractions that have been at the resort for years. First to highlight is Shockwave, the UK’s only stand up coaster. Opening all the way back in 1994, its four inversions and stand up function makes for a unique and iconic ride. Maelstrom is one of our favourite flat rides in the UK, being a giant Gyro swing ride, that takes rides back and forth in a swinging motion as it also spins 360 degrees. One of the most thrilling rides you can find at Drayton Manor!

For those who love water rides, you can ride Stormforce 10, a log flume ride based on a treacherous storm featuring three drops with one of them being backwards. Those who think they can get away dry on this ride would be mistaken. The ride also had a little refresh in 2021 as the area was rethemed to Adventure Cove. This land also features the River Rapids which rethemed in 2021 that takes a splashing journey with a colourful, vibrant setting.

Year of Events

For 2023, Drayton Manor Resort is going with a full schedule of events to keep the season as busy as ever. Starting the season with Thomas Land 15th birthday which runs from the 1st through to the 30th of April, you will get to party with Thomas. Next up just a week later is the Coronation Street Party from the 5th through to the 8th of May, celebrating the King’s coronation and all things British. This includes fireworks, late night riding, additional entertainment and even themed food & drink!

A few weeks later, a brand new event called Fiestaval takes over the resort with its colourful, fun-packed celebration. This will include dancers, live music and street entertainment throughout the day. Running from the 27th May through to Sunday 4th June. After this event, summer really kicks in with Summer Nights, which is every Saturday from the 1st July through to the 26th August. This event will see the park open till 9pm with live bands & DJ, late night riding on all your favourite rides and themed food and drink. More will be released at a later date but compared to other UK parks, this event will be the highlight of the UK theme park summer for sure!

The last event inside the park itself currently released is Viking Festival. Raise your horns at the ultimate family Viking Festival, including fire eaters, drummers, a DJ Party show, more late night riding and so much more. This event is more of a family friendly addition than Oktoberfest which is seen as other theme parks in September, and you can check this event out from the 15th September till the 1st October.

Outside of the park and heading to the hotel, you can experience Party Bingo. This 18+ event is targeting adults in the area who love to party and want to play some bingo too. Want to know more? Then check out our review which can be found by clicking here!

Drayton Manor Zoo

Included in the price of your day ticket, you can also visit Drayton Manor Zoo. Home to over 500 animals and 16 acres of open plan zoo. You can see animals from all over the world as Drayton Manor play their part in preventing the extinction of beautiful animals, wildlife and habitats worldwide.

The zoo hosts some of our favourite animals such as the Capybara, meerkats and even a cockatoo. They have more animals than this though, such as a whole building dedicated to the reptile species, with more snakes than you need to see! They also have so many other mammals and birds to see, like the Sumatran Tiger or Red Panda.

We love visiting the zoo and it really does take time out of your thrilling day at the theme park to relax and witness some fantastic and beautiful animals. It is one of our favourite zoo’s and perfect for the target audience who are visiting.

Overall, Drayton Manor Resort is ready for the 2023 season with lots of exciting and recent new additions. If the recently refreshed land of Adventure Cove or the new Vikings land for 2022 is not enough reason already to visit, the wide range of events the resort is bringing over the upcoming months must get you excited. Whilst the target market is for the younger and family audience, it has plenty for adults and teenagers who have never been or may not have visited in recent years. We can see the resort is expanding, developing and adjusting to be fun for everyone.

Dean said the following from his visit; “Drayton Manor really have an exciting season and future ahead of them. Experiencing their recent Vikings area for the first time was really fun, and nice to see the upkeep of existing attractions making it a full day destination. The hotel and event options can extend the visit for even longer and for more enjoyment, especially Party Bingo!”

Austyn mentioned; “For my first time at Drayton Manor in 5 years, it was very exciting to get back to see the new themed land Vikings and it was impressive to see in person. On top of that, getting back on Shockwave, trying out the newly themed rapids as well as riding The Haunting, it was a shock how much there was to do. With how many new events there are, I will be back to Drayton Manor for a 2nd visit later this year for sure!”

Thank you to the team at Drayton Manor for inviting us to visit for the opening day of the season. They provided us two day tickets to enjoy the park for the opening.
