INTRODUCTION
Newsham Scream Park, the home of Halloween, is here in Liverpool for its third season. Created by the renowned AtmosFEAR team, the park reopens its doors this October from Friday, October 3rd, through the 31st. The event is staged at Newsham Park Hospital, a genuinely haunting building with a deeply scary history, providing the perfect backdrop for terror. The scream park features four terrifying mazes and a hub of entertainment with food and drink options. While limited street parking is available, the venue has no dedicated car park. Therefore, using ride-sharing services or public transport is highly recommended for access. Tickets start from around £33 and include entry to all four mazes, with a specific timed entry slot for the event itself.

THE OVERALL EVENT…
WOO – Uniqueness | WOO – Operations | BOO – SIDE SHOWS
Creating four new mazes for this season has generated significant hype, and all are hosted inside different sections of the Newsham Park Hospital, which itself is a notoriously haunted location. The building’s atmosphere gave us genuine chills as we entered its grounds, and you would struggle to find a more unique or authentically unsettling setting for scare mazes anywhere in the UK.
We found the dedicated Horror Selfie Museum (a new addition mentioned in the search results) to be a cool side attraction, but outside of this, the non-maze entertainment was limited. While there is live music, a DJ, food, and drink, we felt something was still missing from the central hub.
Operationally, Newsham Scream Park runs a tight ship, with all operations running like clockwork. They use set timers so each group enters approximately 90 seconds after the last. Crucially, the mazes are designed to make it very difficult to catch up with the group in front, which works perfectly for maintaining a high-quality, individual experience.
Larst Resort
WOO – Storytelling | WOO – Concept | BOO – SFX
Larst Resort plunges you into Victor’s retirement home, the final stop before death. However, the residents have grown hungry, and you are the main course! We loved the concept; basing a horror maze on a retirement home, complete with hints of dark experimentation, is genuinely different. The experience began with a beautifully lit stairway that immediately set a haunting, atmospheric tone.
The maze was naturally limited in its use of heavy special effects and chainsaws, which is understandable given the confines of the historic building. However, the storytelling was a highlight from the very beginning, starting with the creepy owner and progressing through encounters with genuinely delusional patients who delivered hilarious stories and dark jokes. Each character had a vital part in the unfolding narrative, with plenty of effective scares integrated throughout.
VICTORIAN PSYCHO
WOO – Concept | WOO – Actor Utilisation | BOO – SFX
Victorian Psycho plunges you back into the Victorian era, bringing the terror of Jack the Ripper to life. The maze’s concept cleverly uses this well-known villain and its northern setting to introduce a unique twist. The space is used brilliantly, leveraging the long corridors for jump scares and sustained creepy moments.
This is another attraction where heavy special effects are largely absent. There is one notable section where you are given a candle to help guide you along the dark path, but we think a few key effects could elevate this maze to a whole new level. The actors, however, are utilized to their full advantage; some deliver key story elements, while others masterfully float and hide in the shadows to deliver relentless scares. They’ve managed to use their shadows and the available space exceptionally well for effective frights.
Phantasma’s Hall of Freaks
WOO – Enjoyment | WOO – Actor Performance | BOO – Theming
Phantasma’s Hall of Freaks is Newsham Scream Park’s funhouse maze. With the circus clowns in town, you get to witness all sorts of freaks hiding within the bright colors and winding paths. The introduction was genuinely cool, featuring an encounter with the leader and strong UV effects. We thoroughly enjoyed this maze, as it was both fun and still managed to deliver scares.
The theming was a slight letdown, relying on simple décor like hay on the floor, with no truly standout set pieces. This meant the inherent atmosphere of the historic, haunted building didn’t really get to shine through. However, the actor performance was stellar; the cast gave it everything, fully pushing for every scream and reaction from the entire group. They seamlessly provided fun, scares, and story, and absolutely lived up to the “freak” theme.
Witch Hunt
WOO – Storytelling | WOO – Actor Performance | BOO – Audio & Lighting
Witch Hunt is the event’s blindfolded maze, meaning you won’t see anything for a large portion of this attraction. Playing entirely on your other senses, the story plunges you into a witch hunt trial, where you’ve been sentenced by a judge to be hanged for your supposed crimes. The storytelling was superb at the start, with the judge and jester setting the scene and looking absolutely incredible.
From the introduction, you put on a blindfold and follow a chain for the remainder of the maze. Because you rely entirely on sound and touch, this experience could have benefited from a more aggressive use of audio and special effects to heighten the tension. The actors truly had to work hard to deliver the scares, using a range of tactics, props, and sounds. While this wasn’t the strongest maze overall, it provided a unique and different attraction for their lineup and had a truly fantastic, memorable introduction scene.
For our first-ever visit to Newsham Scream Park, we were thoroughly impressed. The haunting location, utilizing multiple buildings from the historic hospital, is the event’s biggest asset; the setting looks chillingly scary even without the additional lights and effects. We were pleasantly surprised at how well the four new mazes came together, offering a great mix of story and scares around each corner. While we have no comparison to previous seasons, based on the overwhelmingly positive sentiment from other guests and online chatter, it appears this is their biggest and best year yet.
Our personal favorite maze was Larst Resort; the staircase scene in the introduction was absolutely incredible, and we’re genuinely disappointed we can’t show you how awesome it looks!
A huge thank you to the team for inviting us to experience the press preview before the opening night. They provided us with complimentary entry, some exclusive filming inside one of their attractions, and some food and drink. In return, we reviewed, rated, and provided a video on the event, all based on our honest experience.
