Nightmare in Budapest Title

Step into the dark and twisted world of Nightmare in Budapest, Hungary’s first and only interactive horror show. It is unlike anything you have experienced before! Lots of different themes and characters await as you step into the shadows for a 30-minute journey where true horrors come to life. Unlike traditional haunted houses found in Europe, Nightmare in Budapest promises something a little different, with interactivity throughout the whole experience.

Nightmare in Budapest has been open since 2011 and has had a few different venues across the city during this time. At each location, they have been able to change the experience, adapt, make it scarier, and bring more twisted horrors to life. The team’s goal has been to take the traditional American haunted house—which usually lasts only a matter of minutes with quick scares—and take it further with challenges, set scenes, and interactivity.

The experience is available in English or Hungarian, so it is helpful to understand one of these languages prior to attending. You can book online or in person, with a maximum of 6 people per group. Pricing varies depending on group size, usually ranging between £15-25 per person. They are generally open 6 days a week, with Monday being their closed day. As mentioned, the location can change, so it is worth checking online to see where they are situated. However, they are never far from central Budapest and are easily found thanks to their dark exterior!

Nightmare in Budapest is also home to some escape challenges outside of their main show. “BURYING ALIVE” is the name of the current challenge; it sees you get into a real coffin which is then locked, giving you 60 minutes to try and escape. They use real wooden boxes that look super sinister—which left us too scared to attempt it!

uring our visit, we easily found the venue and signed in at the reception. Here you can use the facilities, store any loose belongings, and read the terms and conditions while taking in the creepy lobby atmosphere. When it is your time, you receive a quick health & safety briefing before stepping into your nightmare.

Our experience saw us meet a number of pretty terrifying characters. The makeup and costumes were outstanding; even in the dark setting, they really stood out and pulled you deeper into the nightmare. Our favourite had to be the “plant girl,” who sent chills down our spines as soon as we saw her.

You meet a whole range of characters, and each plays out a small part of the story—from a gathering in a church to a haunted bedroom or a meeting with the chef in the kitchen. Some of these scenes required mini-challenges, such as finding the exit or locating items quickly to prevent even more scares. You don’t just sit back and watch, either; each character spoke to us, asked questions, and got us involved.

One of our favourite scenes was at the very start. We were unsure what we were walking into, but found ourselves trapped in a maze with the whole cast hidden in the dark—grabbing us, separating the group, and creating a totally disorientating scene. With the strobe lights and the feeling of being outnumbered, it was truly horrifying and broke that “safety net” feeling right from the start.

Ultimately, Nightmare in Budapest had us running out the door and straight toward the exit as the experience came to an end. They promised and delivered on top scares, interactive moments, and high-quality theming and costumes. The whole experience was hidden within one building in Budapest, and with it being open all year, it is truly something special.

We can only recommend you take a visit the next time you are in Budapest for something different to do. It does not take up too much time, but it is a unique kind of experience that provides plenty of fun and horror to your trip.

A huge thank you to the team at Nightmare in Budapest for inviting us to come and check them out. They provided us with a complimentary experience along with exclusive opportunities to get photos and videos inside, which is usually not allowed. This was in return for our honest review of our experience.
