We were invited by the team to visit and play the escape room, Run.
Theming & Storyline – 8/10
Run has a creepy feel to the room as soon as you step inside. Due to being based on an abandoned orphanage, we felt immersed from the get go with dark enclosed spaces and spooky soundtrack. The story prior to entering the room sets the scene as to why we ended up there and it was our job to escape before the children’s souls return at the strike of midnight. Players are required to wear a blindfold as you enter the room to create tension as soon as the game begins. This is a very unique element for us and something we have not seen too many times previously. Our senses were heightened and it really immersed us into the storyline.
There were different layers to the room allowing players to explore various elements including the corridor and bedroom of the house. With various props and simplistic effects, the team were able to create suspenseful moments enhancing the creepy vibes. Whilst the experience was not exactly tagged as a horror experience, it was clear that an unsettling and disturbing environment has been created very well with the use of props both large and small such as iron gates to enter the house and children’s toys.
Puzzles & Flow – 7/10
There are a wide variety of puzzles throughout Run. This linear room had a good flow from one scene to the next but required some precision in areas. We did have to ask for a couple of clues throughout the experience to keep us on the right track but we thoroughly enjoyed the size and scale of the some of the puzzles including the light up skulls. We liked how there was a great variety of both mental and physical challenges with crawling into the fireplace as well as identifying the different symbols to create the spell. These challenges blended in perfectly with the overall theme and storyline making it difficult to concentrate at times with the eerie atmosphere around us.
Uniqueness – 6/10
Although we have seen a number of rooms before themed around an orphanage, this in itself was a very unique maze as it was not classed as a horror theme. There are some unique puzzles that we have not seen before, as well as entering with a blindfold on. We liked how there were some very detailed elements and thought through moments with the puzzles fitting in well with the theme. The room itself was situated in a one of a kind venue with a haunted bar to enable players to extend their spooky experience.
Overall, we had a fantastic time at The Great Escape Game, we really enjoyed taking part in Run and escaping with 7 minutes to spare! The theming, storyline and puzzles all worked together really well and felt there was enough in the room to do as a group of three to work together as a team within the eerie setting.
We do not want to spoil the game for you but would thoroughly recommending visiting and we would love to return to play another escape room game in the future. Thank you to the team for inviting us to take part in playing in return for our review and social media content.
