Spore by Colab Theatre Review ()

INTRODUCTION

SPORE is here for Halloween 2026! Created by COLAB Theatre, one of London’s leading immersive theatre companies, it takes over all six floors of a former dental school on Gray’s Inn Road, near King’s Cross, for a 90-minute immersive horror experience described by director Bertie Watkins as ‘The Last of Us meets Arrival’.

A forgotten London dental school has been sealed under quarantine. Deep beneath its anatomy labs, an intelligent fungal network has begun to spread, communicating through bone, radio interference and living tissue. Two investigation teams have already vanished inside. You and your team are next. Pull on a protective suit and move through treatment rooms, labs and corridors, gathering samples, decoding the organism’s language and placing transmitters to build a communication grid. Along the way you will meet the survivors the spores have already changed, and face one terrible question: is this outbreak a threat to contain, or something trying to make contact? With up to 30 people in each performance, your decisions shape the outcome, destroy it, contain it, or let it spread.

SPORE runs from 20th October to 7th November 2026, with performances at 7pm and 9pm. Tickets are from £38.50 per person.

About our experience…

Colab Theatre have always been on our radar and when we’ve heard they were launching a Halloween show for 2026, we had to make sure we got to experience it. Colab have been behind many great immersive theatre shows over the years and we’ve been lucky to experience a handful back in the tavern location however, Spore would take us to a new location, the Colab Dentist.

Heading to Chancery Lane on the tube and then a short walk away from there, we found the building which from the outside, looked like it was huge. Advertising the experience over 6 floors and lasting approximately 90 minutes, we would be taken on a scientific journey with plenty of horror along the way. As we head inside, we got to check in at the reception, put our bags and coats away and change into overalls which was recommended as the building was dark and dusty. We had a quick health and safety video to watch before we could start our immersive theatre journey.

SPORE

WOO – storytelling | WOO – concept | BOO –  actor utilisation

The experience is heavily story based and they have done this from the moment the experience starts. Before we could even leave the reception, we saw an altercation between one of the scientists and a government official who was talking about this new fungal intelligence starting to spread. The military wanted it contained whilst one scientist wanted to communicate with it to see if it was friendly. We were given an hour to help the scientist with some (sexy) science, (a lot of sexy science actually) before the military would step in to do what is required to contain it.

With such a strong introduction, the rest of the story blended in with this and led us helping, taking part in this investigation to see if we could communicate with the fungal infection. Along the way, we found out that maybe there was an alternative motive for the scientist maybe wanting to communicate with it….

What we will say is the actor utilisation was the weakest element of this experience. It was a small team who put this together and were actually running it. With it having 3 cast members, they had a lot of places to be and a lot to do, whilst managing up to 30 guests. There was the odd moment where we felt we had nothing to do or had completed the task and were waiting for guidance. That said, they have managed with a small team to really deliver an incredible performance. With comedy and scares, covering a large space, adding fear and tension and everything in-between.

The concept of Spore is so different, using an infection story and trying to add science to it with communication and then adding interactive moments and growing the story using the elements of immersive theatre. This completely works and the time does go so fast when you’re involved in the heart of the operation.

Honestly, Spore is super unique in the London immersive theatre environment and what they have created is a lot of fun and fear in a bundle of entertainment. Colab Theatre have created something that is genuinely haunting and realistic, with the building having no lights outside of the science lab meaning, you know heading to the basement or the attic, with just a torch, was going to send chills down your spine.

There is so much more we could talk about as there is so much to explore in the 90 minutes. The show came to a quick ending with a decision from the whole team to be made and one that could be quite explosive.

A huge thank you to the Colab Theatre team for inviting us as a group of 3 to the experience. They did provide us a complimentary experience for our honest feedback and content.

Tickets run until early November so you still have a bit of time to get last minute tickets to experience this for yourself. Every show will be slightly different and chaotic!
