Prepare to escape the ordinary with Exitus Escape Rooms in Cardiff. Located in the city centre, you can find this escape room company offering a range of immersive escape room games. Opening back in December 2018, the close knit team took the plunge and opened their dream rooms after finding the right location for them to start this journey.The team started to play escape games in 2015, since then they have played over 100 different games between them and have used their range of experience to design unique puzzles and rooms you won’t find elsewhere.
Exitus Escape Rooms have a few outdoor games you can explore, these being Operation Mindfall & Magic Portal. These games are charged at £50 per game for teams of 2-6 and are played out and about in Cardiff. These are not exclusive to the company as you may of seen these about however, for locals or people who have not played these games, Cardiff would be a great city to try it in.
Now onto the main course, they have 3 exciting escape rooms currently. These are Tenovus Virus Tinkers, The Curse of Senutep and Coco Loco. As you can see, all 3 themes are completely different, with you having the choice of viruses, Egyptian or chocolate to pick from.
All games are for between 2-8 players with the Virus Tinkers room being the exception with it only hosting up to 6. Pricing varies depending on the amount of players, with 2 players being £29 per person and if you have 8 players, it drops to £18 per person. For the location they have and for pricing of escape rooms, we believe this is very fair and is value for money for the experience they are offering.
Finding Exitus Escape Rooms in Cardiff was pretty simple. Putting on Google Maps, it was a short walk from where we parked our car and you can find it between Card Factory & Specsavers which are easily recognisable in the main shopping district. Upon entering, you head up some stairs and you can find the waiting lobby area which is also a bar called The Locked Inn (very clever). Here, you will be checked into your game and if you arrive early, you can even have a drink from a decent range they have. The venue has plenty of seats and you can even purchase take home escape room games here also.
We caught up with the very kind team before before playing our room and even got a chance to meet the best employee, Watson!
The room we took on was The Curse of Senutep, which had the following story;
“Your great grandfather, Thor Heyerdahl, disappeared decades ago while researching the lost pharaoh Senutep. After years of carefully studying his notes, you have determined the location of the ruined Temple of Senutep and you believe that is where you will find out what happened to Thor.
The mystery is not the only thing that drives you. Thor entering the tomb released a curse. This curse has been following your family through the years. You must solve the mystery of the Pharaoh Senutep, the leader erased from time, in order to survive.Gather a team of those you trust the most, and put your minds to the test, in The Curse of Senutep.”
Story & Theming – 7/10
The Curse of Senutep has a very detailed story which is given to you prior to going into the room. This sets the scene of what you’re stepping into and what you need to do to escape and complete the room. We really liked how the staff were able to adapt the story to make it affect you personally, giving it that personal touch which not many escape rooms do.
Entering into the room, you can clearly notice a few things which add an eerie nature to the room. This being how dark it is and that you are given a light source each, all keeping with the theme of the room. This made the room a little difficult to see at first but once you get your bearings, you will understand this is not a scary room and only adds to the experience.
The theming of the room was all kept to the Egyptian story. Using skeletons, Egyptian relics, hieroglyphics and even sand! Whilst all simple and nothing that stood out, it combines together to make a really well designed room visually.
Puzzles & Flow – 8/10
The puzzles in this room were very clever in many places. Again, with the whole room being themed to the Egyptian style, the puzzles did not disappoint and kept with this theme. With it being a non linear room, this allowed us to split off, find different elements to do and then group up to make a team effort in completing this room.
Some puzzles were really clever and different in this room. Whilst we got some quite easy, there was some which did require a lot of thought. Not everything was straight forward and it does require you to think out of the box on quite a few occasions. What we did like is you have to complete a series of puzzles to move forward and this is measured by a lighting system, so you know when you have done it right. Simple but effective.
The flow of the room worked well as you could keep chopping and changing which puzzles you were on for the most part. We didn’t feel like we were held up at any point in solving the puzzles and had everything we needed at the right times and when we wanted it.
Uniqueness – 7/10
The Curse of Senutep had some really unique moments within. Whilst the theme is quite a generic and well done theme, the Egyptian theme allows for many different adaptations from it. Exitus have used all things Egyptian in this room and kept it very authentic. The use of sand as the flooring in the room is one of the more unique elements, as you don’t see this too often but is actually a key part to the theming.
We like some of the more different puzzles in the room, as they are all designed in house, this means they are not seen elsewhere. Whilst you will find similar puzzles across escape rooms, including here, you can find many different styles here.
Another unique element is the rewards card at the end, here you can see they put your time and name like most places, but also has a section for your team top talent, depending on what your team did best. For us, that was translations!
Overall, Exitus Escape Room The Curse of Senutep room was a real pleasure to play. We loved the in-depth story, the Egyptian theming and the very clever puzzles throughout. Outside of the room, you have to love the small team who have a lot of passion and of course the friendly dog Watson!
Dean mentioned the following after visiting; “The Egyptian themed escape room at Exitus had some really interesting puzzles making you work as a team. The floor covered in sand really added to the authenticity along with some great theming pieces.”
Austin mentioned; “The Curse of Senutep was so much fun to play and experience. When entering any new escape room, it is always interesting in what you see first and the environment you may be in for the next hour. This room kept giving you surprises and curveballs, even when you thought you found everything there was always another layer to it.”
Outside of this experience, they have other popular rooms that we would love to check out when we next visit. Coco Loco seems to be the most popular with its chocolate theme. Also, we’ve even heard they are building a brand new room coming soon…
