Are you ready to experience Liverpool’s number one live escape room centre? Perfect for friends, families, colleagues or even date nights. With 60 minutes to solve the puzzles and complete the challenges with the idea of escaping one of the 15 uniquely themed escape rooms they have on offer. Breakout Liverpool means business!
Opening back in March 2015, Breakout Liverpool has been highly popular ever since as they grow in popularity and how many rooms they have to experience. They are part of the bigger Breakout brand, with other centres in Chester, and Manchester, which has seen over 100,000 plus gamers enjoy what they have created.
Breakout Liverpool however is our main focus today, with its 13 escape rooms with a range of different themes to solve in 60 minutes. With this being our first visit, we had so many to choose from, as we have only played with the branded company once before over in Manchester.
Below we take a look at The Haunting, a brand new room that opened in October 2023 and as one of the newest experiences, how it compares to our last Breakout escape and the rest of the rooms similar to this haunting theme…
Our time at Breakout Liverpool was over the Christmas period and this can be seen in some of the footage we’ve taken from the lobby area that they have. The festive overlay was much enjoyed but for for the escape room we have chosen, with it being quite the opposite. We were taking on The Haunting, a horror based rooms which contains religious symbols and references throughout which may make some guests uncomfortable, which is good to note.
With the room theme being based on a team of ghost hunters about to perform our first ever exorcism, we have been tasked to exorcise the evil poltergeist that haunts the graveyard of the Lockewood family estate. The room is classed as a 4/5 difficulty level so we were prepared for it to be pretty tough to free ourselves and complete the challenge set.
The cost to play The Haunting or any of the rooms at Breakout Liverpool depends on how many players and if you play during peak or off peak days. With the lowest costing be £18 per person, based on 5 players on an off peak day, with the most being £26 per person based on 2 during a peak day.
After your standard brief and story update of the room you are about to encounter, we got to enter into The Haunting.
Theming & Storyline – 9/10 – The theming within the haunting was something a little different than we were expecting. We was predicting a very haunting setting and to be terrified from the moment we walked in but, we were left with the feeling of wanting to explore further. It was more mysterious and spooky rather than super scary. We loved how it all came together and linked with the story and the theme worked with that. The story kept with what we were told before entering and kept a simple narrative to follow to complete our mission.
Puzzles & Flow – 6/10 – The puzzles inside The Haunting started out right on the upper end of the difficulty level. We found ourselves in a tough spot and struggled to get out of it however, once we did we managed to get back on a great roll of successful solving padlocks, finding hidden treasures and decoding secret messages. We can see why it was a 4/5 in difficulty! The flow managed to balance itself out, as even if you do get stuck, you are able to break out of this eventually and move forward with the story and task in hand.
Uniqueness – 6/10 – The Haunting was unique in the way of it wasn’t what we thought it would be for a horror room. Don’t get us wrong, it had plenty of jump moments and situations which left us not knowing what was going to happen next but, it was certainly not as scary as we thought it was going to be. We recommend this room if you are happy for some scares but not to be left wetting yourself!
The Haunting was certainly an experience for us. We rarely play horror-based rooms as we hate the idea of being terrified for an hour straight but The Haunting wasn’t that. It had plenty of puzzles to keep you occupied and it had a friendlier approach but not too friendly that you can trust it. The more mysterious essence this escape room gave as an experience was very welcomed and we enjoyed it. We would recommend having a strong team with you if you want to escape, as it was very difficult at times.
Austyn said, “The Haunting was very challenging, but it was great to put my thinking cap on in order to solve the exorcism required to escape.” Dean said, “not as scary as I was expecting, but pleasantly surprised by the theming and story.”
