Thorpe Park Ghost Train 2023 Review

Thorpe Park Ghost Train Review ()

Are you ready to take the last train departing from Thorpe Park Junction? Thorpe Park Resort presents Ghost Train, the brand new attraction for 2023. Taking over from Derren Browns Ghost Train: Rise of the demon, a new dark unique storyline takes over as you enter the veil of darkness.

The next generation of this ghost train has been in the pipeline for some time. The attraction originally opened at Thorpe Park back in 2016 as Derren Browns Ghost Train, using virtual reality mixed with immersive environments and actors to create a one of a kind attraction. More on this version of the attraction can be found in our review by clicking here!

In 2017, it reopened as Derren Brown’s Ghost Train: Rise of the Demon and had an uplift on some of the virtual reality sections and some minimal changes inside. We also reviewed this updated attraction which more can be found about by reading our review by clicking here!

This then takes us to 2023, where Thorpe Park decided that it would take the ride down a new route and remove the problematic virtual reality. The attraction had always suffered with technical delays and long pause moments inside the attraction, creating unpopularity and it feeling less re ridable than other attractions at the resort.

The newest version of the attraction finally opened to the general public and for the first time in 2023 on May 26th. We were fortunate enough to visit a VIP preview of the attraction the night before to be some of the first guests ever to enter the new ghost train.

The story now follows a dark, original story which the resort says the following; “Depart the mortal world on a one-way ticket beyond the veil into darkness on THORPE PARK Resort’s newest ride experience – Ghost Train. But watch your tracks, death is always one stop ahead. This next generation of Ghost Train will take you on a harrowing ride into the realms beneath THORPE PARK Resort to where the supernatural believers call home. Ghost Train is one of the UK’s longest ride experiences featuring live actors and multisensory effects to create a terrifying attraction like no other!

There’s nothing virtual about this petrifying experience, so prepare to meet your maker as you come face-to-face with horrors that dwell within.”

Entering the area during our VIP preview, the first thing we encountered were some new characters that linked to the new storyline. First we witnessed the CC Ghost Tour duo, who were vloggers capturing the paranormal. Are they just crazy and just seeing things? Who knows. Next up we came across the Believers, a group who believe of life after death and it seems they are recruiting for more members of the cult. They were handing out different flyers which were cryptic and confusing at first. If you were able to decipher them, the secret message came across quite dark and sinister.

After some great interaction moments, we then were ready to ride the new ghost train. Thorpe Park have taken the decision to keep what’s inside a bigger secret than before and we were not allowed to film or take photos inside this time. We do like to keep our reviews as spoiler free as possible and therefore will only mention the core elements of our experience during our few run throughs.

Noticeable changes can be seen from the outside of the new Ghost Train, with new building decor standing out and it being themed to Thorpe Park Junction. With some new hidden easter eggs in the queue, you can find posters linking to old rides, current areas and snippets of where you may end up on the last train that is departing Platform 13 from Thorpe Park Junction.

Heading inside the building, you’ll notice changes right away with a new pre show and introduction to Ghost Train. Meeting with one of the train conductors in the waiting room, here you will stand and wait for your train to be ready to depart. You’ll also meet another new character from the story called Angelois Mortis. He explains more on the Believers, what happened at the crypt and why you shouldn’t go to Chapel Station…

Each part of the Ghost Train has had work done from it from its previous version, with it all looking more sinister than it ever has. From the train you board, to the journey you head on to the crypt and everything inbetween. The experience is now heavily actor led, which each scene having actors which dive deeper into the new story. All performed live using clever special effects and eerie environments.

Before we say too much, Dean’s favourite part of the new Ghost Train is the crypt scene which is very atmospheric with the actors who draw you deeper into the story. Austyns favourite part was boarding the train and having a more actor led story instead of the virtual reality scenes which became a little boring after a few rides. With actors now in control throughout, it’ll provide a better attraction time and time again.

After finishing the ride, you lead back out into the Last Call Café which is a Costa Coffee location with a selection of hot drinks and sandwiches. Also you can find a small gift shop which has some new merchandise, including a Believers T-shirt and hoodie which look very snazzy. They also have mugs and pin badges for guests after something smaller to remember the Ghost Train.

We want to say a huge thank you to the team at Thorpe Park Resort for inviting us down to visit the new Ghost Train. They invited us to the preview event which included free food & drink, as well as being the first to ride Ghost Train before it opened to the public the following day.

With the Ghost Train now open daily from 12, it is worth heading to the island like no other to catch the last train departing from Thorpe Park Junction. Who knows, it may be your last…
