Ready for a new kind of of social with Whistle Punks? The home of axe throwing is here as you can surprise yourself at an axe throwing activity bar with multiple locations across the UK. Instructor led by a talented team as they teach you how to score a bullseye, with 70 minutes to experience, learn and perfect your technique of this thrilling activity. Offering tasty food and drinks on top of a guaranteed great time, Whistle Punks certainly caught our attention.
With 4 locations you can currently find them, you can axe throw in either Manchester, Leeds, Bristol or London. They have come a long way over the years, as they started out as the UK’s first urban axe throwing venue as they found a slot in the market with social competitive activities becoming successful. Since the start, they have now have a strong reputation with over 10,000 5 stars reviews and over 10 million axes thrown over the years and venues.
Our review focuses on the London venue, which is located in the very well known part of London just off Oxford Street. We visited towards the end of 2023 to experience what they had to offer as a axe throwing venue and how they it compares to similar experiences we’ve had with axe throwing related adventures before.
Whilst we believe all venues will follow a similar format, we would recommend checking directly for details relating to price & experience times.
Getting to Whistle Punks in London is fairly simple when you are in London. With the great transport network around the area, you just need to find your way onto the Oxford Street. The local tube stops Oxford Street & Tottenham Court Road are just a few moments walk to the venue, as it can be found just off the main road. They can be found open most days, with just Monday closures at present. Other days you can find it open as early as 10am and closing as late as 11pm, allowing more than enough time to find a slot to throw some axes.
Costing is split into different prices & packages, depending on what you are after. The most affordable and cheapest option is the social ticket, this starts from £25 per person and provides a 70 minute experience with an instructor however, you will be sharing your lane with other punks/customers. Each social lane can have a maximum of 10 players, but it has two axe throwing sections per lane. For those who are wanting to have more of a private experience, an exclusive lane is for you from £250 per lane. They have the big shot lanes also from £345, including 2 house drinks per person and a t-shirt from their merch range. This is also additional to everything mentioned above also. The final is the Bells & Whistles Lanes from £425, which includes 5 pizzas to share and tortilla chips amongst everything already mentioned.
We booked up 3 social tickets, meaning we would be sharing with up to 7 more players on our visit.
Upon arriving at the venue, you will find the booking desk where you can check into your experience. It is always recommended to arrive before your time slot so you are ready at the time of your booking. When ready, you will be told which lane you will be heading to and get to meet your instructor. This instructor will remain with your group from start to finish and lead the session. Here you will also find out how many are in your session today, this can of course range from just your group to up to 10 players. In our group, we had 7 players. Before we started, we of course were taught about everything health and safety related before we were trusted with the axes. This was kept short and swift, to maximise your time with the axes.
Our host was Vicki and she was a true pro as we quickly found out from her tutorial. She set out how our session would go, which that we would learn a few different ways to throw the axes before we would then enter a little tournament between us to see who the best axe thrower was. We would also learn a trick shot skill to take away with us and it seems this is only possible on quieter sessions, so it was great to see they can add special elements to your time depending on group numbers.
Whilst getting into the swing of things, we were helped by Vicki our instructor with little tips and tricks on how to get the axe to stick and how to aim better. With most people heading to Whistle Punks never doing anything like this before, this was really great to see. We have done axe throwing experiences before where after a quick tutorial, you are just left to your own devices and to practise. So with having someone trained always watching & advising, it gave you much more of a chance to successfully throwing a sticking axe in the scoring board. We had plenty of time and throws in our practice session which took up the first half of our 70 minutes. After this, we were then told we would be taking on someone else in a head to head tournament. Depending on your score and if you won against the other person would count, with the best 2 after a few matches taking on a finals match.
The session hosted by Vicki was kept engaging, encouraging and entertaining from start to finish. Whilst you are ultimately just throwing axes to the score board, collecting and then repeating, using different styles and the chance of a trickshot and the tournament game style, it kept it interesting. We didn’t feel at any point that we were losing our on time due to the other customers sharing the lane and everyone had a fair share with plenty of time in getting to play.
As our time came to an end at Whistle Punks, it turns out neither of us 3 were good enough to be the champion of our session, with one of us coming bridesmaid to one of the other players. We had so much fun playing the tournament and learning the different throwing styles. We really did love the extra touch by Vicki of sharing a trick shot skill which some of us managed to master! All our group left being able to throw the axe and making it stick more times than not, plus we all had great fun. The costing of the social lane didn’t feel like it was breaking the bank for this type of experience and whilst other sessions you may be able to get a private lane cheaper or have more time throwing, the addition of the instructor and assistance you get is very much worth the cost.
A huge thank you to the Whistle Punks team who worked with us during our visit. They did provide us 3 social lane tickets to allow us to enjoy their axe entertainment. In return for the complimentary experience, we provided our review, images and TikTok of our time and experience we personally had.
We stuck around afterwards to have a drink from the bar which was fairly priced with similar bars in the area and for London, where they had some great alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. This is a perfect activity for those who are wanting something different and more extreme than your options like bowling or going to the cinema. Super fun with any size group, friends or family, it is competitive social gaming at its finest.
Let us know if you are any good at throwing axes over on our socials!
