A new type of zip wire experience has arrived at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry, and it is a unique adrenaline rush like no other. The Aero Explorer is the UK’s largest zip-coaster, allowing you to fly along an overhead track.
Penrhyn Quarry is situated in North Wales, just 20 minutes from Bangor. It is home to five different adventures that utilize the unique setting of this massive slate quarry. Velocity is the headline attraction, where you soar head-first at speeds of over 100mph over the quarry lake. Quarry Karts is a unique trike attraction where you’re taken to the top and then race down the winding mountain track. There is even a quarry tour and a mini zip wire for guests looking for a milder thrill. There is ample parking onsite, though be sure to pay the small daily charge via the parking app. You’ll also find a fully-fledged restaurant and café serving meals, light bites, and drinks.
We took on the Aero Explorer, a zip-coaster experience that is relatively new to the UK and the largest of its kind. Tickets start at £22 per person; please note there is a booking fee for each transaction, so it is best to book several activities together to save. The ticket price includes two laps around the course, which features two distinct sections. The entire experience—including the briefing—takes around 45 minutes. You are also expected to arrive 30 minutes before your slot to check in.
Our Aero Explorer experience began by meeting our guide and getting kitted up in a harness and helmet. We also had cameras attached to our helmets, which was a great optional extra. After a safety briefing, we learned the most important techniques: how to stabilize yourself by holding the rope in either hand, and how to lift your legs upon landing before stepping down to balance yourself, as the finish can be quite turbulent.
We then headed to the start, where we were securely connected to the overhead track system and given a final check. To begin, you walk up a first spiral walkway to reach the top. This first section is a bit of a “taster”—it’s slower and less intense, though it can still swing you around! You then ascend a second, larger spiral walkway before heading down the main zip-coaster section. This part definitely makes the experience worth it; there is a sharp turn that caused us to swing over 90 degrees!
After the first lap, you return to the beginning and repeat the experience. Be aware that time slots can accommodate several groups, so there may be some waiting around. It is also quite a solo experience once you’re on the track, but it’s absolutely worth it.
Overall, we had a blast and are so glad we braved the wet and cold weather to experience the Aero Explorer. It delivered exactly the “out-of-control” thrills we were looking for while still being an incredibly fun experience. The staff were all friendly and super helpful, guiding us through the process and even resolving a technical issue we encountered with our video recording.
We would like to thank Zip World for collaborating with us on this visit. We were provided with the Aero Explorer experience and the on-ride video footage in exchange for our honest review and video content. All opinions expressed are our own.
