Zip World Festive Forest Review ()

A new winter event has arrived at Zip World Betws-y-Coed to bring cheer to those dark winter evenings. Festive Forest features extended opening hours, twinkling lights, and plenty of Christmas music.

The Betws-y-Coed site is situated just a few minutes from the lively town center. It is home to seven different adventures for various ages. The Fforest Coaster is one of the only alpine coasters in the UK, while Plummet offers a thrilling free-fall drop (available solo or tandem) featuring a trap door 100ft up. Skyride is a giant swing seating up to five people that reaches heights of 24m. For those looking to explore the canopy, Zip Safari takes you high into the trees across platforms and zip wires, while younger guests can enjoy the Tree Hoppers and Tiny Trek versions. Treetop Nets is another highlight—a unique play area with walkways and bouncing zones suspended in the trees. There is an on-site car park, but be sure to pay the small daily charge via the parking app. You’ll also find an outdoor café and even a cozy teepee bar.

We visited during the Festive Forest event, which takes place during dusk and darkness. Tickets start at £36 per person for the package. Please note that there is a booking fee for each transaction, so it’s best to book several activities together. The package includes three goes on the Fforest Coaster and one hour on the Treetop Nets, as well as a hot dog, mince pie, and your choice of hot chocolate or mulled wine. You can also add on Santa’s Chimney (Plummet) from £19 or the Sleighride (Skyride) from £13 per person, with discounts available for tandem riders and groups. We recommend allowing at least 90–120 minutes for the Festive Forest package, plus an additional 30–45 minutes for each extra activity.

Access to the Chimney Drop is scheduled for a specific time slot after you’ve checked in at the main reception. The experience began with a safety briefing and getting kitted up in a harness and helmet. Cameras were also fitted to the gear to capture the experience, which you can view afterward via a QR code and purchase online.

We were led along a raised walkway to the tower, where a spiral staircase took us to the summit. Once there, we were instructed on how to stand while being safely secured before carefully stepping onto the trap door with our arms linked. Our guide asked if we wanted a countdown or a surprise drop; we actually changed our minds at the last minute and asked for a countdown, but the guide still managed to surprise us, which was hilarious!

When the trap door opens beneath you, you free-fall toward the ground before the rope system kicks in, slowing your descent just before you reach the bottom. While it is a gentle landing, you do need to be prepared—one of us actually fell over, which only made the experience more amusing! Afterward, you head back to the briefing area to return your kit.

Treetop Nets can be accessed for up to one hour at any time during your Festive Forest experience. It begins with a short safety briefing regarding the various routes and one-way systems, after which you are left to explore the nets at your leisure. The nets rise high into the treeline and feature a variety of different sections, including many narrow, sloping walkways that are exciting to navigate. These then open up into larger netted areas, perfect for jumping around.

We eventually took refuge in one of the treehouses to catch our breath and feel solid ground—though even these sway slightly in the trees! A word of caution for wet weather: the nets will get damp, so be prepared if you plan on rolling around or taking on the unique net slides. The landing at the bottom can be full of puddles, as we found out! It was so much fun feeling like a big kid, running and jumping through the trees after dark while surrounded by vibrant, multicoloured lighting.

The Fforest Coaster can only be accessed during the specific time slot indicated on the wristband you receive at check-in. While in the queue, you are given a safety briefing explaining how to operate and control the sled before waiting your turn to ride. It can be ridden as a solo adult or as one adult with a child; there are also seatbelts to secure you during the journey.

The experience begins with a long lift hill that takes you to the top of the track. From there, the rollercoaster journey weaves through the woods. While there is some auto-braking to maintain a safe speed around the tight turns, it is largely up to you to decide how fast or slow you want to go.

During wet weather, covers can be fitted over the sleds to shelter you from the rain. However, it’s worth noting that you will still get wet, and since the controls are located on the outside of the vehicle, I highly recommend wrapping up warm with gloves! Furthermore, rain on the perspex covers combined with the multi-coloured floodlights can cause glare and reduce visibility on the way down.

There are cameras on each vehicle facing the riders, and at the end, you are given a QR code to view and purchase your video. Since the package includes three turns, you simply head back around after the first go, skipping the safety briefing for your subsequent rides. There can be a wait of about 10 minutes per go, but it is completely worth it.

Overall, we had so much fun taking on the different activities, despite the damp weather. While we feel there could have been a few more festive decorations and lighting, the Christmas music and the appearance of the Grinch definitely brought the holiday vibes. Our favorite part was easily the Fforest Coaster, zooming past the multicoloured lights and through sections of near-total darkness.

We would like to thank Zip World for collaborating with us on this visit. While we purchased our own Festive Forest package, the team kindly upgraded us with the addition of Santa’s Chimney and gave us permission to film on-ride on the Fforest Coaster. This was provided in return for our written review and video content. All opinions expressed are our own. For more information or to book an activity, please visit their website below.
