Alcotraz Liverpool Review

Alcotraz Liverpool

Looking for your next immersive cocktail location? Alcotraz Federal Penitentiary should be high on your list if you’ve not heard of it already. This is a prison cocktail bar that blends your drinks with immersive storytelling as you’re locked in a cell and watched by the guards.

For those who have not heard about Alcotraz, this is a chain of experiences by the team known as Inventive Productions. They craft creative experiences which blend the immersive world with drinks to create something quite special. They are also the creators behind Moonshine Saloon & Avora, which you can both find in London. The teams mission is “to uniquely bring people together and leave a lasting memorable impression with guests. Creativity brought to life!”

You’d be thinking you have heard of Alcotraz before but maybe in another location, and you would be right, as they have several locations across the UK. They have a prison themed bar in London, Brighton & Manchester on top of our visit here in Liverpool. Cardiff is the newest location and one is due to open at the end of January 2024 in Bristol. Alcotraz opened in Liverpool in March 2022 and has been going strong with a 6 night opening week since.

Below we share with you more on our experience of Alcotraz Liverpool & if you want to know more about Alcotraz London, Avora or Moonshine Saloon, make sure you check out our reviews by clicking on the blue text!

Alcotraz Liverpool is one of the most unique cocktail bars in the city and your experience starts prior to visiting. You must book online before coming to the venue and you have to book a time slot, which each last 1 hour 45 minutes. Tickets cost from £36.50, with tickets ranging it cost depending on off-peak and peak slots and if you get the basic ticket or the ultimate ticket. Either ticket will get you the main experience, which includes an immersive theatrical experience, imprisonment in cells for the duration of your sentence and four personalised cocktails!

One important point to note with Alcotraz is that you must bring your own alcohol to the experience. They have recommendations on the sizing but a 70cl bottle is plenty for a group of 2 to share. Each bottle must be sealed as you are going to need to smuggle it past the guards to give to those inside to make your cocktails. For this reason, Alcotraz is an 18+ experience and ID is required.

Our evening started as we made our way to the location in Liverpool which is in the city centre. Easily found, we joined the queue to enter and had our alcohol checked by real security to make sure it was sealed. From here, you are given some basic rules before you enter into the venue, which include basic house rules and what to expect during your time. All this information is also sent in advance when you book, so worth having a read before attending.

Once you enter into the building, you meet with one of the guards and he introduces you to prison life and gets you prepared for your sentence. This includes kitting you out with your very own orange jumpsuit which you wear during your stay. Before taking you to your allocated cells, the guard mentions that we may want a comfort item to take in with us. This was key as you need something to smuggle your alcohol in as if the warden caught you with alcohol then, you would be in some serious trouble. We took a pillow and managed to slip our bottle of vodka in without any questions! There is plenty of fun and quirky ways to smuggle though.

We were then shortly guided to our cell. Each cell is slightly different but all serve the same purpose, it is your home for the rest of the experience. There are 10 cells in total, which take different size groups. So if you book in large groups or small groups, you may be required to split or share accordingly depending on the session and how busy it is. We were fortunate on our session and got our own cell!

Our cell included some comfy seats, a few stools and even a toilet to be used as a seat. We even had a sink (which obviously didn’t work). There is plenty of room to get changed in your orange jumpsuits in your cell and plenty of places to put your items. Whilst you are getting ready, you will meet one of the serving inmates, which are the bar staff. They will come and take your alcohol from you and ask how you like your cocktails. Whilst you have no control of what concoction you’ll get, you can mention you like them fruity, sweet, bitter etc.

Whilst we won’t ruin the whole experience as Alcotraz is certainly something to go & experience, you will get to meet a range of characters that run the prison. Some are friends whilst others are happy to see you locked up for a really long time. You get to leave your cell and explore the prison during certain slots, allowing for a more personalised experience during your time at the prison. The actors were so great in playing the characters and creating an immersive show from start to finish.

The cocktails were given to you throughout the show, with one at the very start and then 3 more in different stages. Each cocktail was very different and the inmate who serves you them creates a unique one for your group. So you can visit time and time again and not end up with the same cocktail, even if you bring the same spirit.

Whilst there are sections of the immersive experience which require you to be silent and watch the show happening around the cells, most of the time you are able to chat with your friends, interact with the roaming guards and characters and just enjoy your strong cocktails. The whole experience is so fun and before you know it, the time of your slot is coming to an end.

To sum up our visit to Alcotraz Liverpool, it was a fantastic immersive experience which had everything we would want. From the unique cocktails which all tasted incredible, through to the dedicated immersive actors who provided a realistic & fun story during your time in incarnation. Whilst you may have to bring your own alcohol in, the cost of the experience does give you 4 cocktails and a show that lasts just under 2 hours. The time flies and is perfect for pre drinks, a night out or just a different take on going for drinks after work.

Dean described the experience as “a laugh-out-loud experience from start to finish with a perfect dose of interactivity and drama!” Whilst Austyn said “Cocktails, comedy and locked in cells, what more can you ask for when you’re having a night out in Liverpool!”

Alcotraz Liverpool is still as popular as ever before and we highly recommend you visit. Not in Liverpool? Then check out one of many other locations they have and with new locations constantly popping up as the audience for this type of experience is growing, we are excited to see its development.

With this being our second Alcotraz experience, they had similarities but many differences also, so we look forward to trying a new location in 2024! Have you visited Alcotraz?
