THE OVERALL EVENT…
WOO – Value for money | Boo – Roaming Characters | Woo – Uniqueness
We always love when a new event surfaces in the UK and Clacton Fear has been one in the making for many years now. Speaking with the passionate team earlier in the year, they wanted to make sure that when they did launch a scare event, it was done properly. We managed to get to the event during a press preview event, which allowed us to be some of the first to see the two new mazes and scare zone.
The 2 mazes can be found in the Jolly Roger theatre building at the back of the pier, which is usually home to some shows during the summer months. They have taken over the top floor, which guests haven’t been allowed up in quite some time and therefore, lots of work has had to happen to make it safe (and keep its creepy atmosphere).
What is great to see with the event is the value for money and what you are getting. With tickets being £25, you do get unlimited goes on the mazes, as much time in the scare zone as you want, and selected thrill rides on the pier. For a brand new event, it is really done well. As they are in year 1, they didn’t have any roaming characters unfortunately, outside of the scare zone hillbillies, but it would be nice in future years for them to take over the whole pier, creating a pure chaos environment all round. Having an event on the pier is pretty unique as not everyone can have the eeriness of the sea surrounding them and the bright lights of the fairground.
Laughing Gas Toxic Circus
WOO – Concept | WOO – actor utilisation | BOO – Storytelling
Starting with Laughing Gas Toxic Circus, this takes your classic circus themed maze and adds a toxic layer to its story and setup. This is where the travelling circus was touring in the Jolly Roger theatre before the boiler room leaked its toxic gas and the circus mysteriously went missing. The concept takes a clown maze but with a more sinister theme. It is able to use effects such as smoke in a much more clever way, as the more smoke, it works as the toxic gas that has taken over the building. Unfortunately, the story is the weakest feature, it is a little simple, but they have given it a good push with an introduction character guiding you to the last sighting of them as you cross a bridge into the show arena. We love how the actors were used, with many different hiding zones and back and forth sections, allowing them to cover you from all angles. They had scares at height and down low, meaning you have to really try to see through the smoke otherwise, you were getting more than just a few jump scares. Overall, it was a really enjoyable maze and for its first year, is a very strong clown attraction.
Mourning Manor Hotel
WOO – Storytelling | WOO – concept | BOO – actor utilisation
Mourning Manor Hotel is the other maze, which takes over the other half of the theatre. It has a great story to start you off with, as you meet Mrs Grady as she welcomes you into the manor hotel. Here, she explains that she is doing her best since her husband passed and she is trying to make sure everybody checking in has the best experience. She tells you not to worry about the guests not checking out but, that soon comes to haunt you as the story comes to an end and she tries to shoot you upon exit! A really clever story, which takes a sweet elderly character before twisting her to be the murderer in this tale. There were plenty of actors inside here as it was more show scenes however, this meant the actors couldn’t be used as effectively, due to them needing to be in their set rooms. They do roam a little bit however, they would look out of place if they went too far, so it is a hard balance for this type of attraction. Overall, Mourning Manor is a great concept for a seaside town, playing on a hotel setup with an old couple running the place, just feels as immersive and as genuine of a maze as you can get. Another standout attraction across the UK lineup this Halloween and we’re super impressed with what the team have managed to create in their first year.
Mullins & Sons: Deadwood
WOO – actor utilisation | WOO – actor performance | BOO – Audio
Mullins & Sons is the scare zone which also features towards the end of the pier and just before the Jolly Roger building. These hillbilly characters cover all sides as they will hunt you, scare you and make you feel unwelcome as you cross their part of the pier. The actors are exactly what make this zone what it is, with their incredible dedication to the cause of being friendly, scary and everything in between, with each interaction being different from the last. Unfortunately, this zone did feel like it was missing some of the atmosphere of the event, with it being a dark pathway and no audio playing, it just lacked that hillbilly atmosphere that some audio could have brought to life for them just a little more. Of course, they have a good use of space and amount of characters, so they are able to use them all to their full potential. It was a nice addition to have outdoors and everybody seemed to love the interactions.
For a first year event, Clacton Fear have done absolutely amazing to produce what they have. They have managed to create two 5 star mazes in their opening year and have managed to create a great atmosphere on the pier. We were thrilled to have seen it before the plans and build went ahead earlier this year and in comparison to the finished product, it has come such a long way and they have achieved what they wanted to so quickly. This builds great hope in what this event can be in a few years time for sure.
A huge thank you to the team at Clacton Pier for inviting us down and spending some time sharing with us what they have created. They did provide us with free complimentary entry in return for our honest feedback and content.
The event is obviously on selected nights for year one and we think it is going to be very popular, so make sure you save £5 online and get your tickets to support this brand new event being Clacton Fear.
