THE OVERALL EVENT…
WOO – Value for money | WOO – Roaming Characters | BOO – Entertainment
We don’t often get to visit The Village of the Cursed and this is our first time visiting under their new name, slightly adjusted from what they were named previously. This event is created by several couples who have come together to create something terrifying. The event has been running for a number of years, changing locations along its way but has over 10 years of experience behind them.
We attended on their opening night and after parking up in the field, we made our way to the station facade front where we waited to go in. You get your tickets checked at the ticket office before heading through the first maze, before getting into the main event arena for the evening. The intro maze is certainly something different to your usual offering, as you are forced to do this introductory maze right at the start, whilst the rest are optional and in any order.
They had a handful of the roaming characters about, the main ones we interacted with were a Jack the Ripper style character, who was pretty spooky and had lots of questionable objects in his bag. Then you also had the main station master, who wandered around with his light, sarcastic and witty comments. It was nice for them to have some of the team out, adding more to the event and keeping everything lighthearted and funny.
Unfortunately, the entertainment was not much. They had a DJ playing popular songs and some side shows of axe throwing and archery but that was all. We feel like some shows would be great to keep people sticking around just a little longer and enjoying the whole Halloween atmosphere.
Although the price for 7 attractions is great value, and even though the mazes can be a little short, getting 7 mazes in an evening is always great fun to see different styles, themes and techniques used. The drinks were super affordable also!
The Village Station
WOO – Concept
The Village Station is a great concept as it links with the whole facade and start of your journey at The Village of the Cursed. How do you get to the village? By train of course, so you head to the station, get your tickets and take the journey to get to the village itself. We love how they made the introduction a maze to warm people up for the rest of the mazes.
BOO – Audio
Unfortunately the audio was not fantastic in this section, with it trying to resemble a station or train ride and also it being an introduction maze, we thought it would feature something more powerful and noticeable.
WOO – Costume & Makeup
The actors inside were dressed pretty spooky, with decent makeup being seen in the dim lights. They managed to look the part of haunting the station and it came together as one of the better elements of this starting maze.
The Inner Sanctum
WOO – Costume & Makeup
The Inner Sanctum was our first maze and again, the costumes and makeup were about what we expected to see in this maze. Featuring nuns, they were clear cut of what they were and had some pretty scary features when hiding in the dark, which we loved to see.
BOO – Lighting & SFX
Outside of the ending scene which had some use of light, the maze featured next to no special effects, which was disappointing to see. These types of mazes can be made really well with a bit more lighting or effect based moments, so would love to see it come back with something more in this department.
WOO – Actor Performance
The intro and outro characters, along with one character who seemed to roam with us across the whole maze were standouts here. They managed to get the odd jump scare and create some pretty freaky moments.
Hmp Strangleways
WOO – Actor Performance
Next up in HMP Strangleways, the prisoners managed to keep up the strong acting moments. They were chaotic, energetic and came at you at speed. They managed to create some intense moments and effective performances to get you scared.
BOO – Audio
We rarely noticed much audio in this attraction and for a prison maze, that can help with the scare factor or chaotic energy it may try and create.
WOO – Screams
With all being said, we were left screaming out of this maze and it was one of the scariest we did of the night. They made good use of tight corridors and chainsaws to create some of the terror, with us left cornered and struggling to escape.
Doom-Entia
WOO – Actor Performance
The team here also did a great job overall in creating some scary performances. With some set scenes and how they built into the story, they made it work and were very convincing in their roles.
BOO – Lighting & SFX
The lighting seemed very simple and again another maze where special effects rarely featured inside, which the whole event needs to improve.
WOO – Storytelling
The world they tried to create was loosely linked to the dementia and doom theme combined. We don’t believe this was offensive as if you go round, there is very little relating that style or offense. There were more story elements added in and it was one of the better story based mazes of our evening.
The Final Cut
WOO – Actor Performance
As you are starting to see, the actors really do make the attractions here at The Village of the Cursed. The Final Cut linked with some story elements and that required the team to perform them with immersion and conviction in mind.
BOO – Lighting & SFX
Unfortunately the theme continued with limiting lighting and special effects used, with many dark scenes and no special effects used.
WOO – Storytelling
The Final Cut had some really great story sections, delivered by different actors in set scenes. Another strong piece of storytelling was done here, with 30-45 second bite-sized stories told to you as you made your way around.
The Inn-Formassmurder
WOO – Actor Performance
The creepy team here managed to do it once more, creating a top-notch performance with some storytelling involved in the opening scene.
BOO – Audio
There was a lack of audio here, more so compared to the other attractions, and it felt like the weakest element.
WOO – Costume & Makeup
From the opening scene, the costume was noticeable and quite prominent. We liked how this featured across the maze and was one of the stronger elements.
Tainted Blood
WOO – Costume & Makeup
Tainted Blood probably takes the crown on the best makeup of the night. From how creepy these characters looked with clever makeup techniques, it was so clear and so scary. We loved how spooky they looked without having to say or do anything.
BOO – Audio
Another low contribution from audio in this maze, which is a shame as we think with some clear hospital sounds or sound effects could have worked well in here.
WOO – Concept
We think the concept of a cosmetic hospital facility which has gone wrong is quite realistic and genuinely horrifying and could play on some real world phobias in the day and age we are in.
As you can see, we had a great time getting back to The Village of the Cursed. It was good to see some refreshed mazes and getting to try something different this Halloween. They have a truly passionate cast who have a range of ages and different acting methods. They have a long history and it seems the event could do with some improvements, maybe reducing the amount of mazes, making them longer and investing in some effects and noticeable audio across, along with an entertainment schedule would be fantastic. However, we know with any event that is based outdoors and has limited time to set up, not everything is possible. Everybody was having a good time for what we could see and we had a great time just getting back after missing out on the last few seasons.
A huge thank you to the team for inviting us to the event. They did provide us with complimentary tickets in return for our honest feedback and content of the event.
We can’t wait to see how the event continues to grow and adapt in future years but for 2026, they still have tickets available so make sure you make your booking sooner rather than later!
