Nigloland is one of the most popular theme parks in France, coming just short of the top after Disneyland Paris & Parc Asterix. Opening back in 1987 in the summer by two brothers, they have gone from strength to strength to get the park where it is today. The name Nigloland comes from its mascot named Niglo, which translate to Hedgehog in the Romani language. With 4 themed areas, the park offers over 40 attractions and shows across the theme park season, with multiple seasonal events.
We visited over the Halloween weekend to experience Nigloland for the first time, alongside the spooky atmosphere of Nigloween, the parks annual Halloween event. Nigloween offers an atmosphere of hell for its 19th edition of the event, with tonnes of Halloween decorations scattered across the whole park. Meet with the Skeleton Orchestra or come across one of the Monsters, all offering a family spooktacular time. The Village of Sorcerers is the village of witches, which is an additional area with more food & drink. The general store changes to the Nigloween store over Halloween, offering all your Halloween needs, from costumes to Nigloland themed merchandise.
Finally, Nigloween offers magic at nightfall as scenery lights and fireworks take centre stage over one of their most iconic rides, Alpina Blitz each evening.
Alpina Blitz
The first megalite type mega-coaster from Mack Rides
The headline coaster at Nigloland, and what really put the park on the map for us rollercoaster enthusiasts. Very few of these compact Mack Rides rollercoasters have been built, and we’re not sure why. Standing at just 33 meters, this ride really proves that you don’t need to have the biggest stats to be one of the best! The coaster features no inversions, but a great first drop and an airtime filled layout. It really is a lot of fun, and gets better and better as the day goes on. The ride featured a nicely themed Swiss station complete with a cable car gondola for the operators cabin!
Krampus Expedition
New for 2021 is the exciting water rollercoaster by Mack Rides. The attraction is the parks biggest investment to date costing around 12 million euros! It’s theme is based around a mythical creature in the Swiss Alps named Krampus which features heavily within the ride. The detailed indoor queue line contains many artefacts from ‘expeditions’ including a skeleton of Krampus. The main themeing piece of the attraction is the large concrete Krampus head which the ride goes through the middle of at it’s final drop into the water splash. We really enjoyed the coaster, and whilst short it had some great forces, and the drop through the themeing structure and into the water was a great touch.
Other Rides & Attractions
Outside the two headline attractions we’ve already mentioned, Nigloland offers so much more. If that is Le Grizzli, the parks Disk’O coaster which was the first European one to be installed back in 2006, or Le Donjon, the parks drop tower that stands 100 meters high and takes the crown for the highest in France! We thoroughly enjoyed the Spatiale Experience coaster, an indoor coaster which reminded us back of the old style Euro Sat coaster at Europa Park. The old space vibes and spiral lift hill was great fun.
We also enjoyed the parks resident show which is the Niglo Show! The Niglo show is all completed using animatronics that take over a reasonable sized theatre venue. Seeming very popular, we experienced this and was very much surprised to see how it all worked, with all of the models working and seeing how it all worked was incredibly clever. Whilst our knowledge and translation of the show was extremely basic as it was in French, we still were engaged and loved the Niglo, Niglo Show!
Nigloween
Nigloween, the parks annual Halloween event which transforms the park to make it even more spectacular than it usually is. They use lots of plants in their decorations including 800 heather, 1200 chrysanthemums and 1500 perennials & shrubs. The most noticeable additions is a huge section of the park has skeletons and other ghoulish creatures added in. This came out from the extended queueline of their ghost train styled ride (which was also an unexpected ride for us). Whilst no mazes or roaming scary actors, it perfectly works for family’s with all guests seeming to love the atmosphere. This added to the parks business with many rides over the 45 minute mark but, this still wasn’t hugely busy compared to your average theme park or its nearby competitors such as Parc Asterix or Disneyland Paris.
Nigloween ends each night with a firework display over the headline attraction at the park, Alpina Blitz. The display lasted around 5 minutes and the area to view them was large enough so everybody had more than enough room. It was a great little display in our opinion and really added to our overall experience and first visit to Nigloland.
Overall, our experience at Nigloland for Nigloween was nothing short of incredible. The park has a natural beauty to it with some amazing attractions. The event was an added layer to our experience and it all came together to a brilliant day. With the addition of their new ride Krampus Expedition, the park feels like a complete experience.
We highly recommend if you haven’t already to visit Nigloland and maybe even Nigloween for 2022! Tickets can be purchased through their website and we look forward to when we can next visit. A huge thank you to the park is in order for inviting us to experience the event and providing 2 free tickets.
