Viper Squad is the latest immersive theatre production to hit the streets of London in 2022. Produced by the team known as Schematic Theatre, they create theatre where the audience is the protagonist. Known for running Siren, which had 2 sell out runs and received substantial critical acclaim, they have launched Viper Squad in 2022, collaborating with CTRLALTREPEAT & COLAB Theatre to produce their latest masterpiece.
Viper Squad was launched as an online only show during the pandemic by the Schematic Theatre team however, they launched a Kickstarter campaign to turn online into live theatre. They managed to reach their goal and we got to see what Viper Squad was all about in February…
“Viper Squad is an immersive-theatre action adventure and loving homage to 80s action film and television classics. A show where the audience is the hero of the story and where their choices have real impact.
It’s 1988. New York City. A team of dangerous criminals are attempting to pull off the biggest heist in history. Lives at stake and millions in cash on the line, only one thing can stop them: You! Welcome to the VIPER SQUAD! An elite team called in to handle only the most extreme circumstances. Choose your weapons. Gather valuable intelligence. Negotiate with dangerous criminals. Can your squad be the ultimate crime-stopping heroes? Think you’ve got what it takes? Welcome to the party!”
Viper Squad sounded awesome and we were very excited to experience this production. Located close to the Elephant & Castle tube station, the location is easy to find and get to within London. Hosted in the COLAB Tavern, the experience includes a bar where you can purchase drinks throughout your evening.
Without spoiling the show, Viper Squad has many interactive elements throughout the 3 hour show which require interacting with a number of different actors, completing different tasks and experiencing some kick-ass 80’s references. From the MTV music channel when we walked in to the American heist storyline.
The introduction really set the scene of the heist and it was cleverly integrated between the Viper Squad team, us and the villains. Each task we had to complete split us into 3 different teams, which would then all have a different impact when you meet up later. This format really works as it allows you to experience different parts of the story and make smaller groups, additionally they can make these even smaller with side tasks.
Another cool feature was getting your code name. Everyone had to have one. We would advise being careful though, as we ended up being called “Thrill” & “Sausage”, forever being known as thrill sausage for the rest of the night.
We got to experience fight scenes, interrogate terrorists, defuse a bomb and work with several crazy individuals to pull off being a hero during our time here. Not a moment goes by where you are disengaged by the chaotic storyline that keeps developing and changing.
The comedic cast really are passionate about Viper Squad and this shows throughout the performance. We strongly suggest when you visit to engage with them and really get involved to have the best possible time.
We couldn’t be more thrilled to experience this immersive theatre piece. It is currently running now until the end of April and runs Thursday to Sunday between 7pm – 10pm mainly, with a possible daytime show too. We highly recommend for you to experience this if you love the 80’s, or immersive theatre, or you are after a different kind of activity in London. These productions are truly one of a kind and are so much fun for all.
Thank you to the Schematic Theatre team for allowing us to come experience Viper Squad & providing us 2 free tickets. We will continue to support and look out for further productions by the team and if you have a chance to visit, let us know your thoughts over on our socials!
To the acting cast, and director, our finals words are ROLES IN A HAT, ROLES IN A HAT, ROLES IN A HAT….
