The RoomSolvers is an escape room company located in Regensburg, Germany. The company has setup with some core values in mind to provide the best experience to every guest that walks in the door. First being that their games are story driven, providing a highly detailed story that you can be submerged in prior to arriving, to the point of completion. The next is that they are extra long, meaning instead of your typical 60 minutes, they provide 80 minutes to escape. Finally, each game is made with love and is original to Regensburg & The RoomSolvers, so you won’t find this experience elsewhere!
They have 2 escape games to offer, one being Back from the 80’s and the other called Der Rockstar, the one we will be focusing on in this review. Each game costs depends on the amount of players, but costs start from €95 for 2 players, but €155 for 7 players, so the bigger the group, the more money saved!
Whilst The RoomSolvers is based in Germany and the games are built for German speaking players, Der Rockstar has been built with amendments to allow English speaking players to play this game.
Der Rockstar is playable for 2 to 7 guests and as highlighted already, 80 minutes to escape. The story is as follows;
“Michael “Der Rockstar” Müller has not contacted you since the tragic event in 2008. It wouldn’t be so bad if he hadn’t also collected your hard-earned royalties but not paid you out.
Now you finally get a sign of life from him and he offers you the prospect of paying back your money – at least €500,000. But the rock star wouldn’t be the rock star if he didn’t let you earn the money! In weeks of work, he turned his new music studio into a puzzle room for you. If you solve the puzzles, you get your money and maybe a surprise or two…”
Storyline & Theming: 10/10
Der Rockstar really ticked every box possible coming to story and theming. As one of the core company values, they really have detailed the story prior to arriving and continued that throughout the room. Playing as one of the band characters in the room, the story takes more than a twist throughout the experience. The theming only backs this up, with it having a music theme, everything in the room related to a Rockstar’s life. With the room being set on a music studio, nothing felt out of place and felt like it would belong in a genuine music studio. From how they give clues to how they put the story across during the experience, it all felt natural and kept you immersed in that setting. Whilst some of the experience could not be translated to English due to the way it is used, they kept with the immersive theme of how they gave it to us in English.
Puzzles & Flow: 7/10
Der Rockstar had its fair share of puzzles with it being an 80 minute room. This was filled with all sorts of puzzles, from discovery to logic, with the game taking a more non linear based style. The majority of the puzzles followed a musical theme, with it linking to instruments, music, records and using them in different ways to provide coded answers. We really liked how so many of the puzzles were ranged in skill and just made sense. We did hit some really tricky puzzles and others where we just missed it completely in error. The German to English barrier really wasn’t an issue as anything that needed translation was already there, and anything that couldn’t be translated prior was supplied to us at the relevant time. The flow was a little on and off, as we hit many different points in the game where we really struggled to progress and felt like we had exhausted all ideas. With that said, everything did link and we really love how the music theme brought the use of some puzzles together, such as using an old school iPod & iPhone.
Uniqueness: 9/10
Der Rockstar really did pull out all the stops to be a unique experience. One of the clear differences in this room is that they used the music theme, with it being about a Rockstar and a band, therefore the atmosphere for this room was rock related music. Having a music system in the room which you can control the volume, the song and how much you enjoy it just for enjoyment purposes. It just made the room so much more enjoyable to have backing music and didn’t take away from the immersion of being in a music studio. Outside of this element, they had some very different puzzles which we have yet to see in other places and that is always a nice surprise to see us using different skills and having to use new ways to solve these puzzles.
Overall, Der Rockstar was a fantastic experience and challenge for us as our first European escape room in person. The standard was high quality from the moment we stepped in, from friendly staff to a cleverly built puzzle room. Rating 4.5 stars by us, this will be one of our firm favourites from 2022 and so glad to see a rare theme done so well!
We managed to escape this 80 minute adventure in 78 minutes, only giving us 2 minutes to spare. Whilst we thought we did it a lot quicker, the room had its surprises.
This escape room was completed amongst many other experiences we did in Germany and for our theme park audience, Bayern Park amongst other mountain parks can be found around Regensburg, so it is worth visiting The RoomSolvers with them.
We wish to say a huge thank you to The RoomSolvers for inviting us to experience and gave us a complimentary experience in exchange for this review. This did not influence our ultimate decision and our thoughts are based on our visit.
