Time for round 2 at The Panic Room in Gravesend but this time, we take on a more chilling theme!
For those who don’t know, The Panic Room Gravesend is a huge multi venue in Kent. Split across 3 locations, each building offers a selection of games.
We took a more in depth look into the business in that review, which you can find by clicking here!
This time we find ourselves to a slightly different location which is 1 of the 3 hubs. Here you can find The Dollhouse, Wizard Of Oz, The Sacrifice and the room we played, The Happy Institute. So with it being the more scary hub (excluding Wizard Of Oz), we were excited to see what they had to offer this time round.
“Welcome to The Happy Institute! Are you ready to face the darkness inside and make the change to happiness? It’s only a pill away… What’s the worst that could happen?
Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone were happy? Here at the Happy Institute, testing is going swimmingly with our newest cognitive supplement; Risus. You have been invited to test the drug in its most recent strain, to help suppress those pesky negative emotions. RESULTS CLASSIFIED. SIDE EFFECTS GUARANTEED
This experience is sure to chill you to the bone! With challenging puzzles and a live actor, this experience will make you unable to look at hospitals the same way again! you’re guaranteed to come out with a smile on your face; whether you like it or not!”
Storyline & Theming: 7/10
The story of The Happy Institute was slightly dark and twisted but with a happy label on top of it. This false sense of security within the story was super clever, and began right from the start of our experience. The experience had a pre story before you start your experience, it was great to have this additional layer added in to make sure you was fully immersed. As advised on the website, the experience does contain a live actor but, the use of this actor is simple yet effective, so I wouldn’t be put off just by this element. The theming throughout was like a lab facility and had many matching attributes. Overall, both these elements linked nicely and really help set the scene and gave some enjoyable gameplay elements. Well, as enjoyable as being in a lab after taken an experimental happy drug can be!
Puzzles & Flow: 7/10
The puzzles were quite difficult in this experience compared to the other game we played with them. As a 4/5 level difficulty, we were left stumped at many puzzles but, that could be linked to being on edge from the live experience at points and the fear of the unknown. The starting puzzle was probably the hardest for the experience and after this, it all starts to make some sense. With this, it sadly broke the flow of the game for us. With scarier games tend to have easy puzzles, we think there could be some better ways to make the game flow more naturally. With this said, a huge mention to the games master / actor who gave us a clever visual hint. A lot of the puzzles were padlocks, keys, finding things, codes etc. Whilst these are not bad puzzles, we would of loved to have some more electronic puzzles to make it more modern. Still a solid gameplay experience but recommended for more experienced players for sure!
Uniqueness: 6/10
The Happy Institute wasn’t as unique as a room as compared to something such as The Loop, but with the live actor, pre story delivery and how the gameplay came together, it was very immersive and unique in that way. With many enjoyable elements to the puzzles, what the actor could bring and how they integrated themselves into the adventure, it certainly put our skills to the test, with even us missing the most obvious things due to the scary nature.
The Happy Institute scored 20/30 which is 3.5 stars in our ratings and overall, it is a worthy scary experience that isn’t too scary but is actually difficult. So it is worth noting all of this prior to booking this room!
A huge thanks to our games master Robert, who played his part excellently and made us have a very enjoyable time with The Panic Room for our second time!
Thank you to the team at The Panic Room for inviting us back to experience a different type of room and with Hell House being the newest scariest experience, we note we may need some practise before doing our next scary room with them! They did provide us with a complimentary experience in return of this review however, our opinions are subjected to the experience we had.
More information and tickets for this room can be found only via The Panic Room Gravesend website.
Do you think you can escape like us? We managed it with 28 seconds spare as a team of 2! Let us know on our socials if you think you can do better!
