Step inside history’s most daring conspiracy and experience history like never before. The Gunpowder Plot is a brand new experience that opened in May 2022 and is a thrilling immersive adventure that takes place with you as part of the story!
Created by the team known as Layered Reality Experience, they are recently known from the hit sensation also in London, Jeff Wayne’s War of the World Immersive Experience. This experience, similar to that, takes you on a multi sensory journey using a combination of actors, themed rooms and latest technology, to fully immerse you into a world and time that the story is set within.
The Gunpowder Plot is set in a purposed designed immersive theatre space in the Tower Vaults, which sit below the infamous Tower Hill where the prelude to the Gunpowder Plot took place before Guy Fawkes’ torture and eventual death. You are thrown into the world the plotters inhabit, as the fully 360 environments and 5 senses ignite into not just witnessing events fold, but with you being a part of it!
The experience lasting around 2 hours with an interval included, has surprises around every turn. With groups no more than 16 guests, really allows you to come face to face with history and with it being an interactive experience, you have the opportunity throughout but are not forced to do so.
Our experience began in early September and as we found the location super easy through Google Maps. Entering into the vaults was eerie and you feel very immersed as you head downstairs to the waiting area. You get given a wristband allocated to your timeslot and when your time is up, the barrels across the bar & waiting area turn to that colour and give a little sound effect to let you know they have changed.
The experience is set in a genius way with an introduction about the experience but with also what is going to happen and how the VR is going to be used. Whilst you think this would kind of be breaking the experience, it didn’t and was one of the best introductions you could have for this type of immersive experiences. From here onwards, the doors into the next scenes and worlds are guided by the doors lighting up like they have been lit by gunpowder, which was cool to see throughout.
We met many characters along our journey as we stepped into this world, some were friendly and others not so much. They continued the story in some heart racing, action packed moments which was full of tension and really making you believe you were actually there and it was real. All the small details help and definitely don’t go unnoticed.
The scenes and sets were very well done and high quality. Whilst the scenes were mostly set in a darkened space, no corner was left unturned and everywhere you look it was well dressed with props or otherwise VR. One of the best features we loved about Gunpowder Plot was the blur between reality and VR. Whilst you know when you are entering VR due to having to put on the headset, there was a scene where the swing prop really added to the virtual reality world and making it feel as real as possible.
Whilst there is some VR used, it is not overpowering to the experience and just compliments the real world scenes and actors that take you along the journey. Compared to other productions, we feel this experience wasn’t as VR heavy and for people who prefer immersive theatre without this feature, you will like it more so.
This experience is fast paced to keep the tension of the event you are witnessing and a part of real. This keeps the experience thrilling and exhilarating, with not a boring moment along your route. We feel it has a truly great flowing story that is easy to follow from start to finish.
At the end of the experience, you get to know more of a breakdown of what was real and what was inspired to make the story you participate in, which is a little fancy touch. A photo opportunity and shop is also available to end the experience, before ending back up where you started to gather your thoughts.
Overall, The Gunpowder Plot is a top theatrical escapade that takes you back through history in a thrilling high quality adventure! We enjoyed every minute and could only wish it was longer. A perfect blend between VR and reality, keeping you engrossed along the way with realistic characters, factual moments and getting to relive historic moments.
A huge thank you to the Layered Reality team for inviting us to experience this immersive production. They provided us with 4 free tickets during regular opening hours. Have you experienced this already as if not, we highly recommend to book today!
