The Escapologist is a multi venue escape room company which is based up in the north of the UK, hosting numerous escape rooms online and in person. Based in two venues, one in Leeds and the other in Castleford in the Xscape Yorkshire venue. With the catch line “Escape the everyday at The Escapologist”, you can head over to tackle one of their games or maybe even grab a drink, or even better, both!
Our review focuses on the Castleford venue which currently hosts 4 rooms and a lovely small bar. It looks very fancy from the outside and very welcoming for a drink. It actually looks very unassuming to the average eye that this is an escape room company from looking at the front and bar setup. The 4 rooms they host are all different themed and have different difficulties, to give guests options when booking for something that will work for them. A fifth room is on its way and as the company expands, improvements and expansions are expected.
Prices vary when visiting The Escapologist, with it being charged based on peak and off peak pricing and the number of players. Prices can be as cheap as £13 per person when 6 people book off peak, through to £24.50 per person for a 2 player game in a peak session. The prices are great value for money regardless and better than most companies that we’ve played at before.
On our visit, we checked out D3LIR1UM, a hard difficulty room for guests over 15. Prior to playing, we treated ourselves to a cocktail which you can also take in the room! We checked in and then were led into the room to start our game.
“Some secrets are best left buried… 1931 and the institute may have closed its doors for good but its sinister acts live on!
Can you still hear the screams? The price of freedom may be more than you expected…”
Storyline & Theming: 6/10
D3LIR1UM is advertised as a pretty scary room with the sinister image of a doll and other dark objects. The name and of course the 15+ age restriction all add to setting that scene. Stepping into the room itself, it had minimalistic theming with blood splatters, dolls and other creepy objects scattered about. Whilst not the highest quality, it was simple enough to do the job and set the scene.
Our story started with some instructions on a computer screen, telling us what we can and cannot do during the game. All pretty standard so far. The storyline was again quite simple but worked without overcomplicating the room and what we were about to experience. We would recommend this for players who aren’t too fussed on a heavy storyline.
Puzzles & Flow: 6/10
D3LIR1UM had a mixture of puzzles and followed more of a linear styled game. With the start of our game being the slowest, we can see why it was the hardest room they have set out. We got really stuck on one puzzle which delayed us quite heavily, however, we managed to get through the rest at a good pace. This is more of an older generation room, with there being some technology but, the puzzles being more manual and physical, compared to tech heavy. Think more padlocks, keys and books than machines and tablets. The flow of the room seemed to work fine in the linear style but with our delay in solving one puzzle, this did mess our flow of our game and morale just a little bit! Overall on self reflection, the answer was incredibly simple.
Uniqueness: 5/10
D3LIR1UM isn’t a unique room in terms of theme or puzzles, however, how it all came together as an experience was great value for money and a fun experience for our team. We say the more unique aspect was being able to take our drink in the room during the game! Whilst not unique, I wouldn’t take away the fact that this is a good quality escape room and offered plenty to keep us occupied.
We managed to escape D3LIR1UM in under 45 minutes, with our previous knowledge of escape rooms coming in handy for sure. We loved the ending of the room and the puzzle at the end with how some of the elements came together for this. It was nice to experience a more simple style adventure compared to something so heavy with story or puzzles.
We would recommend playing D3LIR1UM if you are experienced or are up for a difficult challenge for sure. They do have a range of themes and other difficulties to choose from in the other rooms, so it is worth checking these out if this is not your thing. The value for money is there, with a great bar and a fun hour experience which many guests will love for sure.
A huge thank you to the team at The Escapologist for inviting us to visit and review D3LIR1UM, in return for the 3 of us to play for free, we have reviewed and rated this room. Let us know over on social media if you have visited and played any of the other rooms!
