Blackbeard's Treasure by Escape Hunt Oxford Street Review

The adventure starts here with Escape Hunt. The largest escape room company in the world with escape rooms in many different continents and countries, from the Middle East to Europe, Escape Hunt leads the way with an experience which is growing in popularity year upon year.

They started their adventure in 2013, where they opened up in Bangkok as the first location. Since then, they have managed to rapidly take over the scene, with most people seeing one of their venues somewhere. In the UK alone, they have almost 20 venues with no signs of stopping just yet.

Across the board, Escape Hunt now has over 250 rooms across 40 locations in 17 different countries. All hosting thrilling and fun escape experiences, fun for all the family.

In our adventure today, we stepped into the brand spanking new venue located in London’s Oxford Street. Easily located by the huge sign, sharing the same building as Boom Battle Bar! The easiest way to get here is when visiting London, get the tube to Tottenham Court Road and it is only a very short walk from here.

Prices vary depending on the number of players, costing £30 per person for 2-3 players, or £25 per player for 4-6 players. They have a range of rooms to choose from, such as well known titles like Dr Who or even Alice in Puzzleland, all original games to Escape Hunt!

Out of all the missions they had, we chose Blackbeard’s Treasure on our first mission with Escape Hunt!

“Step onto a pirate galleon in the middle of a battle for control of the High Seas. Your captain, the terrifying Blackbeard, has just been killed and his ship is shot to pieces and sinking fast.

With no chance of victory, you and your scurvy shipmates decide to jump ship – after helping yourself to the contents of Blackbeard’s legendary treasure chest.

You’ve broken into his cabin to grab all you can, but now the door has jammed shut and you’ve just 60 minutes to escape; any longer and you’ll drown – if the sharks don’t get you first.”

Storyline & Theming: 7/10

Our journey started by entering the ship themed room, with an audio based story starting us off in a dark lit room. The story highlighted that we needed to find the treasure and escape within 60 minutes, which gave us a nice simple objective. Once the story ended, the lights brightened so we could begin!

The theme was very evidently pirate themed and all the puzzles and props linked to that. From barrels to flags, to parrots and swords, nothing was out of place or didn’t feel like it wouldn’t match.

We loved the simplicity of the story and the dedication to the theming. It was pretty immersive with the lighting and props, with no external wires or elements to this game which can take you away from the immersion.

Puzzles & Flow: 7/10

The flow of the game was set at a decent pace, with you having room to explore and follow a traditional style game of finding parts, experimenting with what you have found, solving puzzles and moving forward with the game. With it following a traditional style, the game is more of the newer generation, as there were essentially no padlocks found in Blackbeard’s Treasure.

This escape was non linear, giving us multiple options to start with and work together on, but also allowed us to explore & try different parts solo. All the puzzles made sense, although we did manage to skip 1 of the puzzles by getting very lucky, with another puzzle being slightly fiddly.

Uniqueness: 6/10

The room itself isn’t unique, as it is a new generation version escape room. However, if you have not played an escape room without padlocks and wish to see some really unique puzzles, then Blackbeard’s Treasure does tick that box for sure. We did love the interactiveness of the room and puzzles, which some we had not seen elsewhere before. The clue system was worth noting here, with you having to ring the bell at the entrance of the room to get any help or assistance. Without this, they would leave you to your game until you won, or time had run out.

Overall, Blackbeard’s Treasure at Escape Hunt is a solid game which was super fun to play. We had a thrilling, swashbuckling adventure that we managed to escape in 52 minutes with no hints required. The new venue was simple to navigate and partnered with Boom Battle Bar, it means you can grab a drink before and after your game, or continue on the fun.

A huge thank you to the Escape Hunt team for having us in the new Oxford Street Venue. With it opening towards the end of November 2022, it is worth heading down to try one of the handful of games they have to escape. The team gave us a complimentary escape game in return for our review and content.
