Agent November has taken their time to answer some crucial questions before the release of another award winning game, Mind Heist!
For anybody who does not know who Agent November are, can you explain who you are and what you do?
We are ‘Agent November’ – an underground spy agency working around the globe. We undertake missions that prove too tricky for regular operatives so often need to find new recruits to work on cases…
Before lockdown in 2020 our new recruits would join us in Central London to undertake one of our 3 regular missions: “Robyn Yew”, “Major X Ploe-Shun” and “Murder Mr. E”.
These days recruits who join the agency choose an online mission and are able to link up with our spies and operatives via our high-tech interface. This interface looks a lot to the untrained eye like Zoom.
The missions are always against a ticking clock and quick-thinking and puzzle solving is key to achieving the goal of the mission. Some new recruits giggle their way through their missions – we’re not sure why! Ok, we admit, sometimes our operatives make bad puns when they’re nervous.
But if I step out of deep cover for a moment, we are actually Agent November Escape Rooms! A small business based in London.
Over the last 6 years we have had a lot of fun, creating outdoor and pub-based spy-themed escape games, in Bloomsbury and East London.
We have also run our missions at the Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton Fringe and Adelaide Fringe. Best of all we’ve delivered bespoke commissions for organisations like the Houses of Parliament, where we created an escape room that ran inside the Palace of Westminster and explored the puzzles and challenges of lawmaking. Our biggest ever project was in December of last year, when we launched a world first: A museum-sized live online escape room, in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. TV presenter Steve Backshall led players through the locked halls of the museum in a live streamed, interactive night time mission. The mission was seen by over 5,000 people on twitter, 10,000 on YouTube, and 100,000 on Facebook! It raised just shy of £30,000 in donations for the museum.
We jumped online at the start of lockdown in 2020 and have developed our missions accordingly – designing our first online mission from scratch, and launching it in mid April 2020.
How well did your first mission Virtual X-Caper take off?
Virtual X-Caper was created as a result of lockdown – the day before the first lockdown started I popped into my storage unit and grabbed all the kit, wood, puzzles and locks that I could carry, and started designing the game from scratch as an online mission in my studio flat!
While my team and I were designing the mission over Zoom, we also played a few online missions that were already out there and found what sort of puzzles might work online. We’ve all experienced frustration at watching an avatar do things you’d enjoy doing in the room but that aren’t exciting to watch! So we set about creating a great new Agent November mission – with trademark puns and puzzles and part of the ‘Project Pandora universe’ that players of our real-world missions would recognise – but that was specifically designed to work well online.
We have been blown away by how popular it is. We’ve had great feedback from players, a lot of repeat visits from corporations using it as a team building exercise and lots of word-of mouth recommendations. We have also won a heap of awards (we didn’t even know we were in the running for some of them!). It’s been a real rollercoaster of a year but it’s been a joy that the game has been loved by so many. It’s not often you get to spend a year locked to the sink in your room and make people laugh!
We’ve rolled out three copies of the mission to keep up with demand and run missions day and night (late night too as a lot of American teams want a chance to play!) so my producers get to be handcuffed in their homes now too!
Your real life missions also had a short spell operating successfully with social distancing, will these return in 2021?
As soon as it is safe to operate in the real world again, we will reopen our outdoor central London based missions. Last summer we were extremely careful with how we ran our real world missions; all the stuff we’ve come to know and love from 2020 (i.e. social distancing in place, enhanced cleaning protocols, gloves, hand sanitiser; all the classics!).
For 2021 we are keeping a keen eye on government restrictions and recommendations; we always want to go the extra mile when it comes to safety and make sure we are following the spirit as well as the letter of the law. The great thing is that two of our real world missions (Major X Ploe-Shun and Robyn Yew) take place in the parks and streets of Bloomsbury. That means it’s a very low risk activity for our staff customers, compared to if they were meeting indoors. Our Murder Mr E mission normally takes place in a pub (remember those?), so naturally we will have to wait a little longer before that can be relaunched in the real world.
However… excitingly we have plans to tweak these missions and bring out online versions of them all later this year! That means that before too long, players will be able to play an epic online detective story that takes place over the course of not one, but FIVE escape rooms!
What has been your favourite and least favourite part in the creation of these new virtual games?
The best thing has been having a lot of fun in lockdown – missions are a pleasure to run and it’s a great way to feel less ‘locked down’ – even though the irony is not lost on us – we are playing an agent literally locked down!
The less great thing is not getting out and about – some of the street based missions really get the heart pumping. And I’m not sure that my landlady would be happy that I’ve built a cage in my home and repeatedly handcuff myself to the sink. It does limit the options for home decor when you change your living area into an escape room!
Can you let us know more on your new mission, Mind Heist releasing February 14th?
Mind Heist is part of the same ‘storyverse’ as our other missions; It’s another part of ‘Project Pandora’, the mysterious evil masterplan of our nemesis Marty Orri. It provides some back story for Virtual X-Caper as you realise how and why Agent November gets captured. It’s a prequel in a way!
In Virtual X-Caper, the agents tap into the live feed from Agent Novembers’ optic and auditory implants to help them escape. In Mindheist the task at hand is more difficult: Our agents are working with a hostile rogue operative (D.Seet) – communicating with them covertly via bugged spectacles!
We know D. Seet is due to sell some artefacts from the museum of secrets to Marty Orri – something the agency can’t let happen. Without saying too much – we have ways and means to make this rogue operative (D.Seet) more susceptible to our influence – but will you be able to save the day and stop the sale?
Mindheist will include our trademark wit, fun and puzzles – some online research and lots of live action.
We’re particularly excited about this mission because, depending on decisions you make at different stages of this mission, very different results ensue, with multiple possible endings and outcomes.
And the mission is 100% replayable with 100% different puzzles on a second playthrough! This means that players can return, make different decisions than they did on their first attempt, and find new puzzles, other items to unlock and a very different mission outcome is the result! It’s sort of 2 possible missions in 1.
The plan is to run previews from February 14th and the mission will also be available as part of our online presence at the Adelaide Fringe later this month. We are super excited and hope our players will be too!
