Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park is a classic yet action packed venue right in the heart of Coney Island. The beach resort is a must visit when in the New York area, easily reached by the public transport system on various train routes. Deno’s is a short walk from the train station and is accessed from the main road or on the boardwalk seat front promenade. The park has a really interesting history which is detailed around the park and on their website.
The amusement park features a great mixture of classic and modern attractions, most notably the crazy Wonder Wheel and the awesome Phoenix rollercoaster. The park is free to enter and walk around, and operates a pay per ride system using credits which you top up on a card specifically to be used in the park. There are deals for buying credits in bulk, but generally one credit is $1; the major rides cost 8 or 10 credits.
Deno’s Wonder Wheel is one of the oldest attractions dating all the way back to 1920, and standing at 150meters tall it gives amazing views of Coney Island. It’s much more than just your average Ferris wheel though, as it has a clever design which allows some of the Ferris wheel carriages to move around the wheel and swing back and forth. It has to be seen and experienced to be believed, and even then it is hard to figure how it works; an excellent experience!
Phoenix is the newest attraction at Deno’s and was a fantastic surprise. This Vekoma Suspended Family Coaster stands out with its bright red and yellow colour scheme, and is cleverly fitted within the small footprint of the park whilst still providing a great experience. With your legs dangling over the tops of people’s heads below this coaster has so many twists and turns and fast moments including an overbanked turn giving the momentary feeling of going upside down.
There’s several other thrilling and fun attractions including Spook-A-Rama, the ghost train with many up close scares, classic Bumper Cars and even an interactive shooting attraction to stop a zombie breakout. There is also a whole section at the front of the park dedicated to younger children which include two small rollercoasters and many other fun and interactive attractions.
Deno’s is a very compact park, but it has a lively atmosphere and is easy to navigate.
We really enjoyed our visit whilst having a day out at Coney Island. Managed to get on all 3 rollercoasters, experience the scary ghost train and of course have a go the really unique Wonder Wheel which is worth the visit alone. It was a pleasure to meet Dennis, one of the current owners who showed a real passion for the park and gave us a warm welcome.
We’d like to thank Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park for providing us with a pre-loaded card with sufficient credits for us to experience a variety of attractions and soak up the vibe of the park.
For more information regarding the rides, location, prices and history, please check the parks official website!
