Expedition Northpole by Virtual Escaping Review

The ultimate online escape room experience by Virtual Escaping is here, work together in real time to solve all the riddles and puzzles!

Virtual Escaping is a brand new independent virtual escape game company. Hosting games in Dutch & English currently, they have created a unique online system to host their virtual escape games with friends, families & colleagues during this lockdown time.

Expedition Northpole is their first creation with Underground Murder just released in February 2021 as their second game. Both games offer a great challenge with an easy setup, plenty of puzzles and their unique system within the package of the game.

Virtual Escaping offers a team of up to 6 people to play together in real time to solve puzzles and riddles across their games. Expedition Northpole has an average team completion of 90 minutes with 4 players.

To play, you need to gather a team of up to 6 players and purchase 1 code from the website. Games cost £30 per team, meaning £5 per player for a full team, which is great value.

You will then need to make an account on their website, put in the code and you’ll be in the lobby. Everyone who uses the same code will join your lobby and once you are all ready to play, the host can press begin to start the mission and the timer!

Together with 4 professors and a rescue team, Sander Klaus is researching a superbacteria that he believes has been trapped in permafrost for thousands to millions of years. After months of little to no results, a young professor joins the team. His persistence provides a new perspective on the research and after a few weeks the team finally seems to have a breakthrough. Just then Sander Klaus loses contact with his youngest professor.

In this escape room, you take on the role of the research team hired by Sander Klaus to find out why he has not heard from this professor for the last couple of days. Will you keep your head cool and find out what happened to him?”

Expedition Northpool by Virtual Escaping Review

Expedition Northpole allows you to all play in real time and what this means is, if you solve a puzzle or find a clue, everyone else also will get this information. Built in with a live communication system, you can use the chat box alongside connecting with webcam and microphone on the game itself. A brilliant feature that allows you to use their system compared to another calling system.

Another great feature Virtual Escaping offer during your gameplay is a built in hint and assist tool. Never played an escape game or one like this before? No problem, it’ll provide you with more helpful hints before you begin! Throughout the game, there is a hint button in the top right in case you are super stuck too.

Storyline & Themeing: 5/10
The storyline had a great introduction, setting the scene before starting your mission. From here, it connects to the game where the level of graphics is to a good standard for this type of game. Whilst the graphics are not the highest level, it offers plenty of surprises and works with theme of the game.

Puzzles & Flow: 5/10
There were a nice range of puzzles, and some really clever moments surprised us all. There are multiple puzzles that can be solved at once individually, and some that are easier communicated within the team using the different game resources available. The hint feature is useful when stuck and assists without completely giving it away. We did however find that some of the puzzles weren’t clear once completed, and it would have been nice to be able to look back upon completion of the challenge to piece some of the answers together.

Uniqueness: 8/10
Virtual Escaping have created a unique online system which allows players to video call, message and play the game all together in real-time. When one of the players cracks a code, or finds a new item it pulls through into everyone else’s game. This is a great system, and is certainly how on-demand virtual games should be done.

Overall, Virtual Escaping is great value for money for a frosty adventure during this virtual time we are all currently in. The game has it flaws and challenges but this put to one side, for something brand new in this unique format has done amazingly well. Underground Murder which is the next release after Expedition Northpole will for sure be an upgrade to this and will be interesting to see how they add compared to their first release.

A massive thank you is in order to the team at Virtual Escaping for allowing us to experience Expedition Northpole.
