Get ready to scream this October as Hever Castle bring 2 scare mazes with their brand new event called Halloween Scream. Running from October 25th through to October 31st, Halloween Scream promises to take you to the darker side of the castle as you experience live actors, authentic themeing and special effects.
Hever Castle is located in Hever, Kent and it comes with tonnes of history. Open during the day to tour the grounds, you can see exciting exhibits inside of the castle and learn more about its history. With this being the home to Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife amongst 700 years of other Tudor history.
Halloween Scream is the first year of a more scarier night at Hever Castle, with them often hosting more of a family friendly Halloween event. This event still happens during the day however, as night falls, the castle comes alive.
The 13th Frame
“The two-part event starts in the historic Castle where famed spirit photographer Sir William Doyle opens the doors to an exclusive exhibition of his 12 ‘ghost photographs’ to the public for the first time. But his spectrocamera has had a serious malfunction, and the ghosts he has captured on film are now roaming the castle halls. Journey through the Castle in a 15 minute walk through interactive experience. Come face-to-face with the phantoms and witness Sir Doyle’s assistant attempting to capture the ghost of Hever Castle on film in The 13th Frame.”
The event started with The 13th Frame, which was a very theatrical maze. Compared to your usual free flowing attractions, you entered each room where more of a mini story was delivered as you walked through the castle. The themeing was incredible as you journeyed through the castle accompanied with spooky lighting and soundtrack. The characters blended in with the sets and this was a little scary. More a friendly maze than jump scary but still had an eerie atmosphere to it. The main scene in 13th frame lacked the wow factor with no other effects or loud sounds. With some real great moments, it was an interesting story & theme to the Halloween Scream event, just lacked on the scares.

SubStratum
“In the second part of the fright night experience you will be transported back to 1940 when the bombs of the blitz are headed for Hever Castle. Descend into the cellars below the Castle (an area usually closed to the public) and take refuge from the airborne attack as part of the second of the 15 minute interactive experiences; but be warned – a far more terrifying encounter awaits you in a hidden labyrinth. The depraved Doctor Lockwood is conducting bizarre medical experiments inside SUBstratum.”
After a short wait experiencing The 13th Frame, you take on SUBstratum. This maze is hosted in the actual cellar of Hever Castle, an area that is usually closed off to the public. After taking a very steep staircase down, you are introduced by a police character who gave you the story so far. As you progressed through the attraction, it was crazy to see the scale of the cellar and how authentic it actually was. This was creepy alone, just looking around and behind you, it was a real spine-tingling moment. The scares are ramped up in this attraction, with unique special effect scenes, jump scares and stop stories being given. This was a great mixture that built up some big tension. Some thoughts on some particular scenes was that it felt little rushed and pointless and could have done with a more of a scene sequence. With what seemed to be a large actor cast, this had truly terrifying moments and even if they removed the additional themeing and effects they had added for the scare maze, it would be haunting alone.
Scares: 6/10 | Themeing & Storyline: 10/10 | Actors: 8/10
Halloween Scream at Hever Castle is one of a few events that offer authentic themeing and detailed storylines this Halloween. With it being hosted in the castle itself and using what is already available to them, gives them such a unique touch to offer this Halloween. With the help of AtmosFEAR Scare Entertainment, they have started strong opening year which we cannot wait to see how it progresses.
We hope to see the event expand in future years with more than just 2 mazes on offer as the evening felt a little short after doing the mazes. There is a donut and coffee shack open inside the castle grounds before / after you’ve experienced the mazes, but this was all.
Tickets are still on sale and we recommend you to check out Hever Castle with their new event and let us know what you think on our socials! We would love to say thank you to the team for inviting us along to experience Halloween Scream on their opening night and look forward to returning again soon!
