Are you ready to Scream Aloud? Advertised as the south coasts leading Halloween event for the ultimate gut-wrenching scare experience, Scream Aloud return for the 2022 season with the hashtag #BiggerLongerHarder. Hosting 6 scare attractions, a fun fair, live DJ and entertainment plus a food court, Scream Aloud are offering more than ever for Halloween.
Scream Aloud have been around for a few years and started out as a small attraction in the woodlands. It expanded more so in 2021 with 3 scare attractions and now to 6 in 2022. Running on selected dates between October 13th – 31st, you could experience everything they had to offer. Located in Lymington, it is local to many in the Southampton and Bournemouth region and accessible to many in the south region of the UK.
The 6 mazes are run in a linear style setup, meaning you go through them each back to back, with little to no break in between. The rest of your time is there to enjoy the scream marquee with food, drink and rides.
Upon arriving for our first time, we can see it was hosted in a large field with the marquee quite clearly obvious amongst the few rides they had on offer. Once you scanned your ticket, you entered the area. We were invited to the press event, so Fannie exclusively invited us as F.I.P’s (standing for Fannie’s Important People). This allowed us into the scream marquee and into a chained off area from the public. Here we were offered some sweet treats and a refreshment, with some of the street theatre cast performing magic and spooks.
From here, Fannie made a few appearances before making her big debut with a small dancing show on the tables to a few tracks. Whilst comical, it was chaotic and a little random, as we believe this wasn’t for the average guest but nevertheless, fun to enjoy in the moment. After the short introductions, Fannie fastracked us to the front of the queue of the experience in small batches…
Our journey started with the first attraction, Burial Ground. As you can see by our rating, unfortunately this was our lowest rated maze for 2022. It consisted of a short walk into the depths of the field, blindfolded with a few touches using props. No sounds, no scares really. Towards the end when we took our blindfold off, we got to walk through a burial ground, which lasted less than 30 seconds with no actors. Overall, a disappointing introduction to the 6 mazes.
From here, we then joined another queue for the 2nd maze Nocturnal. This was around 20 minutes and was shocked to have to wait this and, would of been more frustrated if we were the general public who would of queued in the first queue before starting the first maze, to then queue this long for the second. With this said, it did thin out more so for the other mazes and this was the worst of it, however, this shouldn’t happen at any linear maze styled attractions.
Nocturnal was an interesting maze, with the maze being completely outdoors set in the woodlands. We managed to see our first actors here and we did get a little jump every now and again. A strange moment when a witch kidnapped half of our group and kept us in her hut, which was funny. The maze was limited however, with it being a woodland walk with a few spooks in the middle. A nice effort for sure and gave us a little more hope with the rest yet to come.
The third maze was House of Dolls, which was the strongest in our opinion of the night. With it being quite claustrophobic at points in the indoor building, it had many moments of a great scare maze for an event of this nature. The actors were creepy, the stuffed teddy rooms were freaky and the length was decent. We were even given a torch as it was dimly lit through the maze and given a nice introduction to the maze, although it was a little crammed and could of done with a few less guests per group. Overall, the best maze of the night.
We move onto Boot Camp, which was one of the better mazes at Scream Aloud. It was themed around a military camp and avoiding those who are infected. Your aim was to get to the camp without being bitten, simple right? We managed to get 1-2 jump scares but more so out of breathe due to the unique fitness routine at the end. It had one of the best actors at the end but more so lacked in theming and a detailed story in our opinion. A maze that could be improved upon but a nice concept.
Ward 13 was the penultimate attraction and this again was interesting. With some pretty interactive characters throughout, it had scenes and elements to it that with work, could make it one of the best attractions at the event and higher rated. Sadly, it just needed to be perfected more, with a few more actors, scares and theming. It did contain a few odd scary moments but lead us more confused and split from our group before the finale, which created a bottleneck. It’ll be interesting to see if returned, if they could add more to this.
The finale was Fannies Yard, which was a comical ending more a basic layout. A chained fence maze, filled with smoke and fake Fannies with chainsaws. It needed more strobes and and actors for sure to make this a true finale, but we appreciated the movie puns with Fannie being featured but, they were hard to see with little to no lighting!
Overall, Scream Aloud wasn’t one of the best events we experienced in the 2022 Halloween Season. We felt there was a huge lack of actors split across the 6 attractions, some of these being too short and simple and whilst they had the ideas and concepts, they just weren’t executed to a good enough level compared to other events of a similar nature.
With this said, Fannie does steal the show of Scream Aloud but if you took her out, would it be worth visiting? We believe with some more perfecting, a bigger team and smaller groups, this could be a much better event for sure. Whilst our opinions aren’t the highest, other groups seemed to adore Scream Aloud and they have received numerous positive feedback from paying guests.
Scream Aloud is likely to return for 2023 but in what form, you will need to keep up to date with their socials to find out! It’ll be interesting to see where the event goes next and how they expand and develop.
