Experience a Martian invasion in London as The War of The World takes a 21st century twist with technology, live actors and iconic music from Jeff Wayne’s musical version! Opening back in 2019, it has invaded central London for 3 years with its breathtaking 1 hour 50 minute show. With over 3000+ 5 star trip advisor reviews, you can see how The Jeff Wayne’s War of The Worlds The Immersive Experience is number 1 as London’s immersive night out!
Inside the immersive experience you will witness 24 interactive scenes as you explore the invasion in an unique adventure with live actors, virtual reality and iconic music. You’ll get to see it, hear it and live it in a never seen before way. Escape London by boat, slide down the claw of a Martian handling Machine and even flying to Mars in a hot air balloon all becomes possible with the help of virtual reality and other immersive setups. You’ll travel all the way back to 1898 to see it for yourself.
We actually experienced Jeff Wayne’s War of the World Immersive Experience back in 2019 shortly after it opened. This was just prior to the covid outbreak however and they have made many adjustments since. If you’d like to check out that review, feel free by clicking here!
When arriving at the experience, you are required to check in at the desk where they will check your tickets and give you a coloured wristband. This is important as it will note what boarding group you are to the experience. When you see the gigantic Martian blow smoke with your colour in the centre of the bar, it will be your time to enter.
The bar is a very stylish area offering a range of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. It is a great spot to get a drink prior to your experiencing starting or having one after to catch up with your group. There is a few technology based pictures on the wall and other alien like theming scattered about.
When the experience starts, you are grouped with other people, however, these are small groups to make sure you have the best experience possible. We believe groups are no more than 12 guests, which is nice to see and allows you to not have to fight for space or the worry on missing out on any scene.
The first half of the experience is very exciting as it sets the scene and for guests who have not done an immersive experience, it really is an exhilarating adventure into a new world. The mixture of meeting real actors, virtual reality and the stunning detailed sets all blend together seamlessly and sometimes, you can really get lost in this environment.
We believe the blend is always being worked on between the virtual and real world, with both battling and trying not to overpower each other. With us doing this experience before, we already noticed some differences and changes, with less virtual reality and more actors being used to guide you through the story.
Half way through the experiences you are taken into an exclusive bar area. Here you can get a drink or snack, pop to the toilet and catch up with your group about the experience so far. It is only a short break, but it is useful to have.
The second part of the experience comes with more virtual reality and other beautifully designed scenes. It all comes together perfectly like it did in the first half. Of course we don’t wish to spoil what is inside and to find out the finer details, the only way is to go experience it for yourself.
Compared to our first visit in 2020, the immersive experience has been upgraded and had some subtle changes to make it even better. The main one is the removal of some of the virtual reality scenes, as the original version had a lot more of this than actors. Whilst virtual reality is amazing to witness in these settings, it was nice to see more of an actor led experience with the use of virtual reality benefitting the story, rather than overpowering it.
Amongst all of the virtual reality and immersive scenes, you cannot forget the incredible music playing throughout, produced by Jeff Wayne. This does add that extra later to this experience, with it building up tension and piecing together the story and scenes. We think it was more subtle in this version compared to our last visit in 2020, which we liked. For any fans of Jeff Wayne or War of the Worlds in general, this is a real treat.
Overall, Jeff Wayne’s War of the World Immersive Experience is a fantastic and beautifully put together experience in the heart of London. From the moment you step in and get a drink in the pub with the Martian watching over you, to the tension filled, chaotic moments held in the interactive scenes. Every scene will leave you in awe and make you want to go experience it again!
The experience ranges if cost but can start as little as £45 through to £130 during peak slots. So it is worth keeping an eye out when it is good to visit. We were kindly invited by the Layered Reality team who design these immersive worlds and experiences, in return for our review and content. Already visited? Check out The Gunpowder Plot which is also created by the same people!
