Colab Theatre is back with a new production for the summer of 2022. The West follows other recent fantastic performances, such as Crooks 1926 which you can read more on by clicking here! Colab Theatre are no strangers to creating immersive entertainment as they have many years of experience alongside many previous successful shows. The company has been around now for 10 years and The West is the latest exciting performance to see until the end of September / early October. Tickets cost £28.50 with the performance including breaks being around 2 and a half hours long.
“The West is a free roam Immersive Theatre experience that invites you to step foot into a real Western experience. Will you become a gun-slinging outlaw or a law-abiding marshal as you build up your town and battle for control?
Turn your hand to classic cowboy tricks to earn your keep; gamble, prospect for gold, catch bandits, rob a bank, and play to win. But beware, for there is a traitor among us. The foes of the wilderness lie not just beyond the boundaries, but within… The Snakebite Bandit roams this saloon and could change your life forever.”
Hosted in the Colab Tavern, not far from Elephant & Castle tube in London, your experience started slightly differently than our last. Instead of entering from the front, we did so from the back and were welcomed by some of the actors. This was a perfect opportunity to get a drink and have some personal interaction with the cowboys. The setting they had outside was well themed and really set the scene of what was about to happen on our journey.
Like all immersive theatre performance we encounter, we don’t wish to spoil what happens inside so that you can enjoy the performance as much as we did. What we can say is that Colab Theatre have such a unique way of putting the story across and making it such a personal experience compared to an average stage show for example.
Whilst some scenes set and performed put everybody together, The West continues the “Colab” way by splitting people into smaller groups and they all play part of the story as much as the actors. The size of the group can depend, you could even be sent on a solo mission!
The West performances lasts around 2 and a half hours but what is included within is full of suspense, excitement and thrill. Our experience certainly contained just that as from the very start, we separated immediately from the main group and ended up on our own storyline which lasted very much for the first half of the experience. It included escape room like features, secret pathways and for us to play quite a big part in the overall storyline. Whilst in the moment we had no idea what we were actually involved in, it made us sink deeper into the story of The West and it felt at moments like a private performance for just us!
Colab Theatre always have different storylines and paths to take and therefore, if we returned we could take a completely different route to the one we experienced. This is only made possible by the clever production and dedicated planning by the team, which always surprises us from each production.
The West was very well themed throughout and in each and every room you can explore. We’ve seen some pretty big changes to the venue since our last visit and we were shocked! There was some pretty impressive big set pieces and effects used, which only helps with the immersion. Even the tavern / drink area this time had small additions to the table and menu to really set the scene of the wild west cowboy theme. All of these details combined is such an upgrade on what is already a premium experience and really does leave you dazzled from start to end.
Not forgetting the true experience makers of The West, the actors play such a brilliant role and execute it with perfection each and every time. With so much of the show having audience participation and people being in different places, the skill required to keep in character but direct the chaos is baffling yet magical.
Overall, The West is the best production we’ve experienced by Colab Theatre to date! It contained everything you would want in a performance. Audience participation, thrilling action packed scenes, highly detailed sets and this only touches the surface of what they offer on this wild west adventure.
The show is available until October 1st at present and we strongly recommend you attend this whilst you can! If you’ve never done immersive theatre, no problem, you can take part as much or as little as you like and at your own pace. If you’re a fan of actor led experience, a different type of entertainment or theatre & shows, The West is honestly for you to experience!
As always, we must thank the team at Colab Theatre for inviting us to experience this latest production. They provided us 4 free tickets for an evening performance back in August. Let us know over on socials if you have been and experienced this so we can hear your views too!
