Escape The Chop is one of the newest escape rooms located in the Reading area. Located in Burghfield Common, which is around 15 minutes away on the outskirts of Reading, Escape The Chop is a singular escape room business which offers a close shave experience in more ways than one.
Escape The Chop is actually hosted within the Burghfield Barbers, an actual barber shop. The escape room has been built into the barbers and being hosted at the back of the building. Created by Alex, he has formed a partnership with them to host a real unique experience in some unused space.
Alex kindly invited us to come and experience this brand new challenge which opened back in May 2021.
Whilst being hosted in a barbers shop, the perfect theme would relate right? Escape The Chop is exactly that with it being a Sweeney Todd styled room that local people keep disappearing after visiting the shop.
“A new barber at Burghfield Barbers suspects their boss is behind the disappearances, but can’t find any evidence.
Local men are being reported missing in the local news…
Do you have what it takes to work out who’s behind the disappearances, find the evidence and Escape The Chop?”
Storyline & Themeing: 6/10
The storyline for the room is pretty cool and is helped massively by the fact of it being hosted in a local barber shop. It seamlessly fits in and makes everything seem very believable. The whole introduction by the owner is realistic and in character, pretending to be a staff member of the barbers and requiring your help to find out if his boss is behind the disappearances. Whilst you complete the room, people are genuinely getting their hair cut and life is normal outside which is just incredibly unique. The theme therefore holds its own with it being themed to an extension of the shop. Sadly, with some cheaper elements to the room and damaged furniture, we wouldn’t say this is the highest quality room you have been in. With this said, the storyline and uniqueness of the room is incomparable to your average escape room and really impressed us.
Puzzles & Flow: 7/10
Escape The Chop has some really cool puzzles with everything making sense as you go through the game. With a non linear experience, this allowed the game to be pretty open with several things to spot and do. Whilst only a small group, this allowed us to do lots in the first 15 minutes, to the point we thought we were almost done. To no surprise, the game took a turn and even more puzzles made themselves apparent. With a lot of padlock styled puzzles, it was great to see some different, creative puzzles in the room scattered about. With a medium difficulty rating, this allowed our game to flow pretty well with no help really required and us maximising the 60 minutes, giving us only a few minutes spare!
Uniqueness: 10/10
How can we not give the uniqueness a top rating! Are we going to find another escape room experience hosted in an actual barbers shop? Probably not. The theme of it and the genius to utilise this space effectively and how it all operates just works for Escape The Chop.
Escape The Chop overall is a must play experience. Whilst it may not have the best puzzles or be the best themed, the experience as a whole with the story and the barbers shop operating, gives the room a really unusual feeling which you won’t experience in any other room. A truly unique challenge.
A massive thank you to Alex for inviting us and talking to us about Escape The Chop. Tickets can be purchased for as little as £18 per person and timeslots available in the weekday evenings and throughout the day on weekends!
