Electric Gamebox are a cutting edge live action gaming brand where your body becomes the controllers. The concept is a box room with 3 touch sensitive walls, video projection onto the walls, and special wearable caps that track the movement of each player. There are lots of different games to choose from which are selected at the time of booking, these can vary from short experiences to longer games varying from suitable for families to challenge seeking adults. Electric Gamebox have locations across the world with several in the UK and even more scheduled to open in 2022. We recently visited the London Southbank location and took on Psychedelic Mansion…
“Join a top-secret CIA training program in this 60-minute adventure which tests your suitability for a career in international espionage. Work as a team as you choose your virtual path through the Psychedelic Mansion, testing yourself at a series of word, skill, puzzle, and action challenges as the mansion tries to trip you up at every turn. Each challenge level is harder than the last and there are 4 evaluations you’ll need to work through. How many can your team complete before the hour’s up? Find out by stepping inside the Psychedelic Mansion.”
This mission is for 2 to 6 people. We played it as a group of 2 and it was pretty full on playing game after game; we imagine as larger groups you may spend periods watching others play. The experience is 60 minutes long, and you have to work your way through as many levels as possible to score points. There are 4 different mini games to play, which increase in difficulty as you progress through the levels.
Word – this game requires some general knowledge as well as understanding of spelling words (although we noticed it’s based on some American words). You select a number on the wall which is the length of the word to spell; you get a category and letters are scattered around the walls, touching the letters in the correct order to spell the word. It’s harder than you think, and there’s also power ups to make things more interesting.
Skill – this game requires the players to bounce stickmen to their corresponding coloured exit on either side, the twist comes where you can only move the bouncy platforms on your own wall, and have to transfer across to the other player. We found this game to be a little glitchy, and one of the harder games, but we did manage to get the hang of it in the end and passed a few levels.
Puzzle – this game requires some quick and logical thinking as the ball keeps spawning out the starting point, and with walls and other features in its way, you play as a block piece to manoeuvre around the gameplay space to allow the ball to reach the finish. This was our favourite of the 4 mini games and changed up each round within each level of difficulty.
Action – move from side to side and jump in this fast paced game whilst collecting the correct gems. The characters are running along individual tracks and you have to move side to side and even jump to avoid collecting the wrong ones or hitting crates and freezing out. Collecting the right ones completes the rounds and collects more points before passing the level.
We had a lot of fun, and were certainly tired at the end of the hour; we do believe it would be more fun with more players than 2 to break the games up a little and watch & enjoy. It was nice to be able to purchase drinks and take into the gamebox, and also loved the air conditioning to keep us refreshed throughout. Can’t wait to see the new venues open and hope a larger variety of games with more minigame challenges are created. We’d like to thank Electric Gamebox for providing us with our hour game.
