Mission: Breakout is the frontier of escape rooms in Camden, London. Situated in a old tube station, it was then closed down back in 1924 due to low passenger numbers. Since then, it has multiple uses and a history behind it, all the way from World War 1 through to today, a modern escape room!
Can you escape from a disused tube station? Perfect for family, friends and colleagues, Mission: Breakout host 3 unique experiences that will test your wits and skills in a number of ways. With an immersive location and theme, it certainty one of the more interesting locations in the escape room world.
Hosting Codebreakers, The Lost Passenger and their new game for 2022, Underground 2099 – you can experience some dark and creepy settings for sure. The experience costs £28 per person per player for each room, with teams being up to 6 people.
Whilst we would love to delve deeper into the other experiences and history of Mission: Breakout in the quirky borough of Camden, we are here to talk about Underground 2099;
“May 2027, the world was turned into a blazing hell. Nuclear weapons launched by our national leaders set all cities aflame in minutes.
There were no winners, only losers. Humanity was plunged into chaos in which morality, solidarity and dignity burned.
London 2099, 72 years have passed since the Great Fire; among the radioactive debris of this once-great city, rats have survived and transformed, trying to take the lead in this new disfigured world.
Your mission is to thwart the plot of their leader, King Rat, hidden within the depths of the London Underground.”
Storyline & Theming: 9/10
Underground 2099 had a very interesting theme as it takes you into the future whilst keeping you in a very realistic setting. With a mutant rat in control and on the loose, we were unsure what to expect. Before the experience, we were equipped with a power backpack which we were going to need to install power to certain stations during our journey underground.
Starting off in a time travelling device and then travelling through this multi room experience into the dark corners of a spooky ghost station, it kept us on edge for a while. We loved the theme throughout and it matched the storyline of King Rat. We were even more surprised with how much King Rat played a part to the story! Combining this with the natural aesthetic and futuristic puzzles, it was strangely worked.
Puzzles & Flow: 6/10
The flow of the experience worked well with the development of the storyline, the tension it builds and keeping you where they want you. The games master keeps you moving in the right direction and the experience should naturally do that too. We did however hit a hiccup during the experience towards the end, with us accidently leaving some parts behind unexpectedly and this causing a problem with a puzzle that we could not complete. Equally, we did have the odd technical hitch during our game too, with a stiff lockbox & a button breaking causing us to not being able to complete 1 puzzle. Please note however, this experience is brand new and faults like this can happen and it didn’t ruin our experience, as they covered it well and worked around it without breaking the immersive story. The puzzles were a great mix overall, however we found the backpacks to have little use the further we ventured into the darkness but were a cool feature for the start. With some more older school puzzles linked with the new technology based ones, the combination between the two mixes together along with the theme & story.
Uniqueness: 9/10
Mission: Breakout is very unique as what other escape room are you going to find that is hosted in an old disused tube station? None! With the creepy background and heritage, with the theme of the game (and sure with the other games too), it just seems to be a recipe for a winner of an immersive escape room experience. If you add in some of the puzzles and how Underground 2099 is actually played out, it really makes an interesting escape room which is different from the rest.
Overall, Mission: Breakout have created a powerful immersive experience with a realistic theme, setting and genuine heritage. All combining to create a 60 minute adventure which takes you on a journey requiring skill and holding your nerve whilst having fun too.
We managed to defeat King Rat and escape in 53 minutes. We were advised it is a hard challenge as a team of 2 and for this room, being one of their toughest yet! We recommend you check out Underground 2099 if you fancy a unique challenge and to see the what a ghost tube station looks like with Mission: Breakout in the heart of Camden!
We would love to thank the team for reaching out for us to experience Underground 2099 in April 2022. This experience was complimentary however, this hasn’t impacted the review, comments or rating scores.
