Are you game for a unique activity in the streets of London? StreetHunt Games is new outdoor puzzle game which can be played in specific areas of London. Designed by Tony & Annaliza, they have designed an experience from their passion of games and immersive experience. Emphasising on not just puzzles, they use captivating locations also to engage an overall mystery to be solved within.
StreetHunt Games is best described as a self-guided outdoor scavenger hunt. Requiring a smartphone and of course a team, you explore central London to solve puzzles and maybe even succeed!
We took the streets on a cold Saturday morning in January at around 10am to experience Colombia’s Finest. The first and currently only game StreetHunt Games offer. Costing £15 per person and you start within the Blackfriars area of London, we were intrigued to see how our experience would go…
Can you spill the beans on what’s happening in Jim Robusta’s coffee company? Jim works alongside people with a shady past and has asked you to sniff out evidence of crime amongst the caffeine.
You were born and bred in London and you feel a deep connection to the city’s streets and their inhabitants. After leaving school at 16, you’ve never entered employment – you spend your days trading in favours with a sideline as a private investigator. Over the years you gained a reputation for being a problem-solver, and your contacts entrust you with ever more challenging tasks. Just last week, you managed to trace someone’s long lost brother to a small village in Nepal. But that’s another story, for another time… All you need to know is that a lot of Londoners (your virtual ‘contacts’ in the Hunt) will try and help you out when asked.
Storyline & Theming
Colombia’s Finest was an interesting challenge with a murder mystery styled game set out for us to complete. As the story is set before you play, you have a fairly good understanding of what you’re job is and why your doing it across the streets of London. Travelling throughout the Blackfriars area, you get to see some history and art, some so obvious and others not. Each location develops the story on more and this was critical to the experience, as you would need this knowledge later on. The story was a little complicated to follow but, we can understand why that was, as they didn’t want to make it so easy that you could piece together in seconds. There was enough depth to the story to make it interesting and for story lovers, you can get lost within the cryptic stories. The theming was limited to the smartphone interface, which was an interactive map via a dedicated web link and of course, the streets of London. Whilst it was simple, it was effective and you can never be disappointed with the beautiful London skyline.
Puzzles & Flow
The puzzles were simple yet clever. They followed on from the main story and smaller stories within the experience. An experience like this is limited with what kind of puzzles can be used, this is due to them not being able to monitor them and in the streets of London, things are always changing. The experience gave you a story of a number of different players, a task to solve at a set location and you would answer it by giving a word answer on your smartphone. With multiple locations and multiple puzzles to sometimes solve, you would need to make decision on where you wanted to go. This links perfectly in with the flow and keeps the game moving. Whilst some of the questions were a little hard, they give you the option to request a hint and even the answer if need be. We used a handful of hints and required to use the answer button twice. They made sense afterwards and it was great to see some were challenging. Whilst it may be an easy decision to just ask for hints and answers, you lose points behind the scenes which would then affect your overall rating at the end!
Uniqueness
StreetHunt isn’t the first to be running an outdoor self-guided scavenger experience and are not unique in that style. We’ve only played a small number of games of a similar style however, they all have their own quirks and differences. What was unique with Colombia’s Finest is the scoring system and actually the story within the story. Whilst you are exploring London and solving each puzzle which has it’s own mission, it all links to the main narrative. It requires you to pay attention to everything for the end of the experience. The experience is split into a few different sections. The introduction, which is basically a tutorial on how the experience will play out. The main game, this is split into two halves with an optional half way break, where you solve all the puzzles. The finale is you have 15 minutes to work out from the people you have met, who is guilty and what role did they play. You get to look back at everything you managed to gather during your journey throughout London to piece it all together. With essentially 4 main questions to answer, it really does make you think.
We managed to spend 10 minutes and actually struggled to work it out. This part of the experience was the hardest and did require us to really think. Examining the clues and reading back through the notes, it does require a keen eye for detail. Somehow, we managed to get every single question right which helps massively towards our end of game score.
We managed to score the expert rating, gold! This is based on speed, clues obtained, identification of guilty parties, less deductions for hints, skips and excess attempts. As you can see, a lot of behind the scenes elements can change your game and scoring. Whilst you’ll never know till the end, it is a good element to be mindful of throughout. We managed to save Jim, get the StreetHunt’s Gold Award and complete all of the challenges in under the 2 hours! Make sure you send a team photo to them before, during or even after your game, so they can customise it as a little souvenir for your experience.
Thank you to the StreetHunt team for inviting us to play and giving us a complimentary experience so we can share it with you!
Wondering who is Jim? Or maybe you want to know how many cool landmarks there are in Blackfriars? Or you believe you can match our expert score? Then we’d recommend you book up with StreetHunt today! Tickets can only be purchased directly with them or via DesignMyNight.
