Swamp Motel are an award winning immersive virtual experience creators, with now a trilogy of games available to play. Each of these games give immersive entertainment that blurs the boundaries between theatre, film and gaming.
We’ve done a full article on who are Swamp Motel, which can be found here!
Swamp Motel have now released their third game in the series called The Kindling Hour. The third part of the trilogy of games that have been released over the lockdown period and this games follows and concludes the stories from Plymouth Point & The Mermaid’s Tongue.
The Kindling Hour can be played as a one off adventure like all of their experiences however, if you follow the story you get the full experience. We’ve experienced the other two games before The Kindling hour and we recommend you check these out also. More information on these can be found on our reviews found here;
This review was completed on a press evening for the event and is spoiler free of the complete experience. The experience is now live and can be booked over on the Swamp Motel or The Kindling Hour website.
“Beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing. You and your team must use all your skill and guile to evade capture, infiltrate the dark heart of a powerful organisation, and bring it down from the inside.
But who is the anonymous source trying to recruit you? How can you identify the true enemy? Who can you trust?
With every click they could be drawing closer, so you’ll have to think fast and rely on each other to stay one step ahead. Hack the system. Crack the codes. Find their weakness, before they find you.
The clock is ticking, The Kindling Hour approaches… it’s time for you to reveal the truth…”
The Kindling Hour started in another unusual location and continued on the story with how it was left on The Mermaid’s Tongue. If you didn’t play this experience, it gives you a recap of the story so far to help fill in the context. We then launched into the unique system that hosts the game, similar to what was used in The Mermaid’s Tongue but with some improvements.
As we worked through the puzzles, one thing led to another and the whole story was turned upside down. We were shocked! Everything we thought we knew from the other games was tossed to one side and only now, were we finding out the truth.
With so many shocking twists throughout this final chapter, it was mesmerising. This was all accompanied with a high quality film set with some amazing cut scene elements that keep you grasped to the very end.
Storyline & Themeing: 9/10
What more could you ask for in The Kindling Hour? The storyline flowed and incorporated everything you learnt and experienced from the previous games and brought it a conclusion that was to film quality. The themeing was premium, from the virtual setup to the cut scenes, not one bit felt out of place.
Puzzles & Flow: 8/10
The puzzles have continued to be clever and integrated into places you wouldn’t even know. The use of every day websites to some technology based features all combine and flowed. The system that they use allowed for so much to happen and you really do have to think out of the box with this experience to get the answers.
Uniqueness: 8/10
As we’ve praised before, the system is unique to the experience, which improved upon The Mermaid’s Tongue. This has mad e it feel even more immersive and thrilling. We loved how this opened up a lot more flexibility with what they could do compared to other places. There were moments where you thought is this really happening!? For a virtual game to do that is impressive.
The Kindling Hour is the final piece of the jigsaw of an experience we want to relive over and over again. The team behind the experience have been very clever creating all the different aspects. From escape puzzles to the overall storyline, which has been combined flawlessly. The immersive theatre features much more prominently in this experience, which really gives it the edge and pulls you into the centre of the action. This was further assisted by the high quality film-like end scene which really had us on the edge of our seats (computer chairs)!
We must say a massive thank you to the whole team at Swamp Motel for creating this trilogy of breath-taking entertainment. We managed to complete The Kindling Hour in just over an hour in a team of 2. Want to play The Kindling Hour? Then book your team of 2-6 on a Tuesday through to Sunday slot now, but only after you play the other two experiences!
