Operation Mindfall by AIM Escape Review

AIM Escape is an established escape room company within London offering 4 high quality indoor experiences. Their latest ventures are virtual and outdoor experiences. This review is about ‘Operation Mindfall’ which they boast as a ‘2 Hour Outdoor Augmented Reality Experience’ whilst seeing “Iconic & Beautiful London Sights’, ‘Discover City Secrets’ and it’s a ‘Fun Filled Calorie Burner’.

We have already taken on 3 of their indoor escape room challenges and our reviews can be found here:

There are two locations where you can start your Operation Mindfall mission from within London. Both missions cover the same game content and overall mission, except the locations and sights around London are different, so it’s just down to preference. We took on the ‘East London’ challenge and started near the Monument underground station which is easily located. It is a private Expedia E which is just for you and your group. As time slots run throughout the day. You may well catch up with another group at the same location but it should have no impact on the gameplay. Prices range between £20-£25 per person depending on number of players and can be booked directly through AIM Escape.

We are W.I.S.E.: an independent, international intelligence organisation, operating at the highest level of secrecy to protect the world from danger. Our sources report that the secret research company, Spider Technologies, has developed a virus for mind control and has already infected 20% of the world population. Whether it be shopping behaviour, political attitudes, or even assassinations – people can be influenced against their will. Needless to say, this is an incredible power. To stop Spider Tech, we created Operation Mindfall and chose you as our agents. Your task: Obtain the antidote to stop Spider Tech! You only have a limited amount of time – can you do it? *Adults must accompany children on all outdoor games.”

The basis of the game is you use a tablet with a purpose built system and map tracking you by GPS which you follow around to key points of interest. During your journey around London at these points you must complete challenges using a range of tools. The tablet system shows information, puzzles and clues, and depending on the challenge you can use the camera for augmented reality, or dive into the rucksack full of different items to aid the game.

The start of our game saw us trying to locate an undercover agent who was hanging around the location. Here we were briefed on the mission and given the tablet device and rucksack to use for the experience. The live spy actor introducing the mission was a great touch and set the scene well. During our experience we had to watch several videos on the tablet, though we struggled with the brightness at some points, sound with volume up wasn’t an issue.

At certain points you are instructed to use the photo boards with codes on, this is scanned using the camera on the tablet and becomes an interactive augmented reality video or puzzle which we found to be impressive, especially trying to type numbers into a keypad whilst holding the camera still. There was a decent variety of puzzles which varied from paper based, to using physical props and actual London buildings & surroundings. A key feature is that part of the completion is based on finding and creating an antidote, which involves solving clues to mix ingredients together.

The theming and storyline of the mission is of a high quality. There is a lot of detail in the story and it flows well being clear what the mission is and the steps you take. It is important for all the group to try and look around the tablet when videos or other key updates are being given otherwise you may not keep up with it.

Overall, Operation Mindfall is a must play game if you fancy exploring London and you are up for a challenge. This was perfect for us to have a morning walk and enjoy the weather, whilst having something engaging to do. The technology was some of the best we have seen and whilst quite a long experience, we believe there is plenty for everybody to do and gives a good challenge to try and save the world!

We’d like to thank AIM Escape for inviting us to take part in this fun experience with complimentary spaces for 4 people. If you wish to find out more information or to book tickets, please check their website.
